From the theory of intertextuality as well as cultural anthropology, this paper analyzes the relationship between the intertextuality of rhythmic forms and that of cultural images in Arthur Waley's English translation of poems Jiuge, and the modernity of Chinese poems translated in English. The study shows that Chinese poems translated in English, renovated by the translator, not only quicken the modernism of English poetry somehow, but are also modernized for rebirth in the Western culture.
