This study was part of a larger project, which recruited 2,758 adolescents from 10 middle schools through stratified random sampling in Guangdong Province, China. Of those schools, 63 classes in grades 7 to 9 were selected through random cluster sampling. Participants were between the age of 10 and 19 years (M = 13.53; SD = 1.06; 54% girls). Prior studies have found that a positive school climate can prevent adolescents from developing problematic Internet use (PIU), yet gaps remain in identifying the proximal mechanisms. Guided by social control theory and the self-medication hypothesis, this study examined the mediating roles of adolescents' sense of school belonging and depressive symptoms in the relationship between perceived school climate (PSC) and adolescent PIU.
