We study the properties of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with a multistage model of heavy-ion collisions that combines the TRENTo initial condition ansatz, free-streaming, viscous relativistic hydrodynamics, and a relativistic hadronic transport. A model-to-data comparison with Bayesian inference is performed, revisiting assumptions made in previous studies. The role of parameter priors is studied in light of their importance for the interpretation of results. We emphasize the use of closure tests to perform extensive validation of the analysis workflow before comparison with observations. Our study combines measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), achieving a good simultaneous description of a wide range of hadronic observables from both colliders. The selected experimental data provide reasonable constraints on the shear and the bulk viscosities of the quark-gluon plasma at T≈ 150–250 MeV, but their constraining power degrades at higher temperatures, T≳250 MeV. Furthermore, these viscosity constraints are found to depend significantly on how viscous corrections are handled in the transition from hydrodynamics to the hadronic transport. Several other model parameters, including the free-streaming time, show similar model sensitivity, while the initial condition parameters associated with the TRENTo ansatz are quite robust against variations of the particlization prescription. We also report on the sensitivity of individual observables to the various model parameters. Finally, Bayesian model selection is used to quantitatively compare the agreement with measurements for different sets of model assumptions, including different particlization models and different choices for which parameters are allowed to vary between RHIC and LHC energies.

With >1 400 species, bats comprise the second-largest order of mammals and provide critical ecological services as insect consumers, pollinators, and seed dispersers. Yet, bats are frequently associated with infectious human diseases such as SARS, MERS, and Ebola. As early as the end of January 2020, several virological studies have suggested bats as a probable origin for SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19. How does the public view the role of bats in COVID-19? Here we report pilot data collected shortly after the outbreak of COVID-19 using two online surveys, combined with a conservation intervention experiment, primarily on people who are receiving or have received higher education in China. We found that 84% of the participants of an online survey (n = 13 589) have misunderstood the relationship between bats and COVID-19, which strengthened negative attitudes towards bats. Knowledge of bats, gender, and education level of the participants affected their attitudes towards bats. Participants who indicated a better knowledge of bats had a more positive attitude towards bats. The proportion of female participants who had negative attitudes towards bats was higher than that of male participants. Participants with a higher education level indicated a more positive attitude towards bats after the outbreak of COVID-19. A specially prepared bat conservation lecture improved peoples' knowledge of bats and the positive attitudes, but failed to correct the misconception that bats transmit SARS-CoV-2 to humans directly. We suggest that the way virologists frame the association of bats with diseases, the countless frequently inaccurate media coverages, and the natural perceptual bias of bats carrying and transmitting diseases to humans contributed to the misunderstandings. This probably led to a rise in the events of evicting bats from dwellings and structures by humans and the legislative proposal for culling disease-relevant wildlife in China. A better understanding of the relationship between disease, wildlife and human health could help guide the public and policymakers in an improved program for bat conservation.

Neutron star mergers are believed to occur in accretion disks around supermassive black holes. Here we show that a putative jet launched from the merger of a binary neutron star (BNS) or a neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger occurring at the migration trap in an active galactic nucleus (AGN) disk would be choked. The jet energy is deposited within the disk materials to power a hot cocoon. The cocoon is energetic enough to break out from the AGN disk and produce a bright X-ray shock breakout transient peaking at similar to 0.15 days after the merger. The peak luminosity is estimated as similar to 10(46) erg s(-1), which can be discovered by the Einstein Probe from z less than or similar to 0.5. Later on, the nonrelativistic ejecta launched from the merger would break out the disk, powering an X-ray/UV flare peaking at similar to 0.5 days after the merger. This second shock breakout signal may be detected by UV transient searches. The cocoon cooling emission and kilonova emission are outshone by the disk emission and are difficult to detect. Future joint observations of gravitational waves from BNS/NSBH mergers and associated two shock breakout signatures can provide strong support for the compact binary coalescence formation channel in AGN disks.

In this paper, we study the spectral property of a class of self-affine measures mu(R,D) on R-2 generated by the iterated function system {phi(d) (.) = R-1 (.+d)}(d is an element of D) associated with the real expanding matrix R= (graphics) and the digit set D = {((0)(0)), ((1)(0)), ((0)(1))}. We show that mu(R,D) is a spectral measure if and only if 3 vertical bar b(i, )i = 1, 2. This extends the result of Deng and Lau [J. Funct. Anal., 2015], where they considered the case b(1) = b(2). And we also give a tree structure for any spectrum of mu(R,D) by providing a decomposition property on it. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this article, a sensorless field-oriented vector control strategy combined with an improved adaptive sliding mode observer and a back electromotive force (back EMF) observer is presented for a surface permanent magnet synchronous motor. First, based on a sliding mode, a current adaptive observer with estimation of back EMF is proposed to obtain the error of the back EMF, which can reduce system chattering. Then, a back EMF observer based on the back EMF error is constructed to adaptively track the rotor speed and position, which avoids complicated computation. Moreover, the stability of two observers is proved by using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, some simulations and experiments are given to show that the proposed method can track the changes of rotor speed and position with good characters, such as fast convergence, little chattering, and good robustness.

1,3-Dienes are readily available feedstocks that are widely used in the laboratory and industry. However, the potential of converting 1,3-dienes into value-added products, especially chiral products, has not yet been fully exploited. By synergetic photoredox/copper catalysis, we achieve the first visible-light-induced, enantioselective carbocyanation of 1,3-dienes by using carboxylic acid derivatives and trimethylsilyl cyanide. Under mild and neutral conditions, a diverse range of chiral allyl cyanides are produced in generally good efficiency and with high enantioselectivity from bench-stable and user-safe chemicals. Moreover, preliminary results also confirm that this success can be expanded to 1,3-enynes and the four-component carbonylative carbocyanation of 1,3-dienes and 1,3-enynes.

Vehicle re-identification supports cross-camera tracking and the location of specific vehicles in a smart city. The gallery images of vehicles are ranked based on the similarities in the appearance of objects to a vehicle query image. Previous work on vehicle re-identification has mainly focused on global or local analyses of predefined regions of vehicles to classify the vehicle images with a softmax loss function. On the one hand, separate global or predefined local regions of vehicles are often sensitive to perspective and occlusions. On the other hand, the embedding space supervised by the softmax loss function is not sufficiently compact for the object class. To solve these problems, we propose an end-to-end distance-based global and partial multi-regional deep network (DGPM) that combines multi-regional features to identify global and local differences. We exploit a three-branch architecture to learn the global and partial features from coarsely partitioned regions. A global similarity module is introduced to reduce the background information interference in the local branches. Unlike general classification, we design a distance-based classification layer that maintains consistency among criteria for similarity evaluation. Furthermore, we use spatiotemporal vehicle information to improve the vehicle re-identification results when the camera and shooting time are available. Systematic comparative evaluations performed on the large-scale VeRi and VehicleID datasets showed that our approach robustly achieved state-of-the-art performance. For instance, for the VeRi dataset, we achieve (79.39 + 2.78)% mAP and (96.19 + 2.26)% Rank-1 accuracy.

We report a study of the processes of e(+)e(-) -> K+Ds- D*(0) and K+Ds* D-0 based on e(+)e(-) annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb(-1). An excess of events over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the D-s(-) D*(0) and D-s*(-) D-0 mass thresholds in the K+ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at root s = 4.681 GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as (3982.5(-2.6)(+1.8) +/- 2.1) MeV/c(2) and (12.8(-4.4)(+5.3) +/- 3.0) MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 sigma over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate for a charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into D-s(-) D*(0) and D-s*(-) D-0. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), thiols and enzymes are regarded as important biomarkers in the physiological process. The abnormal levels of the above species are associated with many diseases, developing a fluorescence detection method for biomarkers is of great significance for diseases early diagnosis and therapy. Compared with traditional fluorescent dyes, aggregation-induced emission (ALE) based fluorescent emitters display excellent photostability with minimum aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Thus, the biomarker-activable AIEgens have attracted much attentions in biomedical research. In addition, many AIE emitters not only act as fluorescent dyes, but serve as promising theranostic agents. The AIE based image-guided multifunctional theranostics under the activation of biomarkers are vital to the precise biomedicine. This view focuses on the recent development of ROS, thiols, and enzymes activable AIEgens from single fluorescence imaging to multifunctional theranostics. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZ states at BESIII and B factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII during the remaining operation period of BEPCII. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

We review the present status of the search for a phase transition and critical point as well as anomalous transport phenomena in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), with an emphasis on the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. We present the conceptual framework and discuss the observables deemed most sensitive to a phase transition, QCD critical point, and anomalous transport, focusing on fluctuation and correlation measurements. Selected experimental results for these observables together with those characterizing the global properties of the systems created in heavy ion collisions are presented. We then discuss what can be already learned from the currently available data about the QCD critical point and anomalous transport as well as what additional measurements and theoretical developments are needed in order to discover these phenomena.
