This study explored the impact of family socioeconomic status on the parent-child relationship, the mediating role of children’s Internet use, and the moderating role of grade. A total of 450 pupils (mean age 9.69years, SD = 1.23) in grades 3 through 6 completed the Parent-Child Relationship Questionnaire, Children’s Network Questionnaire and Family Affluence Scale. The results showed: (1) family economic status, Internet use and parent-child relationship were significantly inter-correlated; (2) family socioeconomic status positively predicted a more supportive parent-child relationship, and children’s Internet use mediated this connection (mediating effect being 14.4% of total variance; (3) grade played a moderating role in the second half of the mediation model: For the junior grade children, family socioeconomic status predicted parent-child supportive relationships through the mediating role of Internet use, whereas the mediation effect was not significant for the senior grade children.

A growing body of research has demonstrated that mindfulness can effectively alleviate depressive symptoms. However, few studies to date have investigated how mindfulness links to depressive symptoms from the perspective of attention. Moreover, it remains unknown under what conditions mindfulness links to depressive symptoms. To fill in these gaps, this study examined boredom proneness as a possible mediator and meaning in life as a possible moderator of the link between mindfulness and depressive symptoms. A sample of 746 college students (Mage = 19.23; SDage = 1.06) in China completed the self-report questionnaires of mindfulness, boredom proneness, depression, and meaning in life. Results of mediation analysis showed that boredom proneness partially mediated the association between mindfulness and depressive symptoms. Moderated mediation analyses further revealed that the indirect effect of mindfulness on depressive symptoms via boredom proneness was moderated by presence of meaning and search for meaning (two components of meaning in life), respectively, with the indirect effect being stronger for individuals with lower levels of presence of meaning/search for meaning. These findings broaden our understanding of the psychological processes that underlie the association between mindfulness and depressive symptoms, and offer practical guidance on relieving depressive symptoms. Limitations and implications of these findings are discussed.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing incidence of mobile phone addiction, mobile phone addiction has been considered to be related to adolescents' psychological distress. However, the underlying mechanisms of this relation were still unclear. The present study tested the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of the capacity to be alone in the relation between mobile phone addiction and psychological distress. METHODS: 754 middle school students were recruited to complete measures of mobile phone addiction, rumination, the capacity to be alone, psychological distress and demographic variables. RESULTS: Mobile phone addiction was significantly and positively associated with psychological distress, and this link could be mediated by rumination. Moreover, the direct effect of mobile phone addiction on psychological distress and the indirect effect of rumination in this link were moderated by the capacity to be alone. Both these two effects were stronger for adolescents with lower capacity to be alone. LIMITATIONS: The present study is limited in terms of its sample selection, cross-sectional design, and self-reported instruments. CONCLUSIONS: The present study advances our understanding of how and when or for whom mobile phone addiction is related to serious psychological distress. Education professionals and parents should pay special attention to the psychological distress of adolescents suffering from mobile phone addiction, particularly for those with lower capacity to be alone.

Smartphone use has become increasing popular worldwide in recent years, contributing to smartphone addiction tendency. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between self-expansion via smartphone and smartphone addiction tendency, the mediating effect of need satisfaction perceived online, and the moderating effect of environmental sensitivity, respectively. A sample of 1338 adolescents from Hubei Province of China (M = 16.09, SD = 0.96) were recruited to complete anonymous questionnaires. The results revealed that self-expansion via smartphone positively predicted adolescent smartphone addiction tendency directly and indirectly through the mediating role of need satisfaction perceived online. Moreover, environmental sensitivity moderated the mediating effect of need satisfaction perceived online as a second-stage moderator, and the mediating effect was stronger for adolescents with higher environmental sensitivity. The present study suggests that reducing the level of need satisfaction perceived online and teaching adolescents how to seek social support and develop coping skills may be important in the prevention and intervention of smartphone addiction.

Although Social Network Site (SNS) usage has been shown to be related to online compulsive buying among women, little is known about the mediating mechanisms underlying this association. Based on the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model (I-PACE) for addictive behaviors and social comparison theory, the present study examined the mediating roles of upward social comparison and state anxiety in the link between passive SNS usage and online compulsive buying among female undergraduate students. A sample of 799 Chinese female undergraduate students (mean age = 19.86 years, SD = 1.63) were recruited to complete questionnaires measuring passive SNS usage, upward social comparison on SNS, state anxiety, and online compulsive buying. After controlling for online shopping experience, the results showed that passive SNS usage was positively associated with online compulsive buying; upward social comparison and state anxiety partially mediated this link, which contained three mediating pathways – the separate mediating effect of upward social comparison and state anxiety, and the sequential mediating effect of upward social comparison and state anxiety. These findings can advance our understanding of how passive SNS usage is related to online compulsive buying among female undergraduate students. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed.

摘要:
The present research tested the mediating roles of positive feedback and relational certainty in the relation between active social networking site use and life satisfaction. A survey research method was adopted in which four anonymous questionnaires, Inventory of active social networking site use, Positive Feedback Scale, Relational Certainty Scale as well as Life Satisfaction Scale, were completed by 742 senior middle school students. Results indicated that active social networking site use could not only predict life satisfaction positively through the mediating role of positive feedback, but also through the mediating role of relational certainty. The sequential mediating role of positive feedback and relational certainty could also be found in the complex mechanism of active social networking site use on life satisfaction. These results shed light on the importance of active social networking site use and positive feedback for adolescent adjustment.

The present study aims to provide electrophysiological evidence for deficient inhibitory control in problematic mobile phone use and to investigate whether reduced inhibition is more pronounced during exposure to a mobile phone related background cue. A screen scale of smartphone addiction was completed by 227 college students, and finally an experimental group and a control group consisting of 20 problematic mobile phone users and 19 controls were included in the study. Event-related potentials were recorded during a backgrounded Go/NoGo task performed by those two groups, in which either a frequent Go signal (letter “M”) or a rare NoGo signal (letter “W”) was superimposed on three different background cues: neutral, mobile phone application-related and mobile phone using-related pictures. Results showed that problematic mobile phone users performed more commission errors than controls following mobile phone application background. Furthermore, problematic mobile phone users displayed a weaker NoGo P3 amplitude than controls on the mobile phone application background. The result might suggest that there is no general impairment of inhibitory control in problematic mobile phone use. The deficient inhibitory control on behavioral and psychophysiological level appeared merely in the mobile phone-related background. Such deficient stimuli-specific inhibitory control appears at the late stage of inhibitory control. Prevention programs should be designed to curtail exposure to the mobile phone-related stimulus and enhance cognitive control of potential problematic mobile phone users.
