Properties of the scaled factorial moments are analytically studied within the framework of the Landau mean field approach. Dependences of the moments on resolution are found to be different for first-order and second-order phase transitions. It is suggested that the moments ln Fq should be fitted to powers of X≡ δ1/3 in the range of high resolution in order to extract information about the phase transition in a parameter independent way.
