晚年马克思、恩格斯将研究视域从西方转向东方落后国家,围绕俄国公社如何避免资本主义发展所付出的沉重代价,走上新式发展之路,提出了著名的"跨越论"构想.然而,马克思、恩格斯的这一构想随着时间的推移已不具备得以实现的可能条件.为顺应时代变化的实际情况,恩格斯重新设想并提出了关于俄国公社未来走向的"缩短论"思想,即认为俄国公社面临的问题已不再是直接跨越资本主义的"卡夫丁峡谷",而是如何"减轻分娩的痛苦",缩短它必然要经历的资本主义阶段的行程.这一思想为包括俄国在内的一切经济文化比较落后的国家寻求如何走向社会主义提供了新的思路和可能路径.
