在历史合力论的视野里，历史进程固然是一个有其规律制导的、从简单到复杂、由低级向高级跃迁的进步过程，但历史进程中的规律生成及其进步表现一刻也离不开人的目的、意志的“纠缠”。也正是因为这一“纠缠”，导致历史进步往往要通过历史进程似自然状态的“盲目性”，历史结果事与愿违的“非预期性”，以及进步与代价相互交织的“曲折性”等表现形式来为自己开辟道路。对于历史进步复杂性的细微剖析与深刻阐明，既是晚年恩格斯对唯物史观的突出贡献，也是历史合力论独到的解释功能。
