乔治·霍尔顿是首位出版诗集的美国非裔诗人，具有里程碑式的意义。本文以霍尔顿的诗歌为研究对象，从自由主题、奴隶与诗人的身份矛盾、艺术特征三个层面展开研究，分析霍尔顿诗歌的思想内涵与艺术价值。霍尔顿的诗歌以自由主题为核心，他是非裔诗人抗议奴隶制的先驱。对于自由的追求使霍尔顿深入思考奴隶与诗人的身份矛盾，这种矛盾在他的诗歌艺术理想中得到舒缓。他的诗歌兼具古典主义与浪漫主义的艺术特征，他的诗歌创作在美国非裔诗歌的发展初期具有一定的代表性。
