留学英伦是余家菊教育思想形成的重要转折点。从踏出国门到应聘归国,余家菊在不到三年的时间里（1922—1924）,学习了当时国外先进的实验学科,考察了西方尤其是英国教育实情。结合在国外的所见、所感、所学,余家菊对当时中国的教育实际进行了与众不同的思考,提出了一些旗帜鲜明的教育主张,这些经历与其后期教育思想的发展、形成有重要关系。
