自詹姆斯1890年把自我概念引入心理学至今,心理学对自我概念的研究曾几度兴衰.在行为主义出现之前,心理学对自我概念的研究兴趣浓厚,但随着行为主义的兴起,自我概念的研究逐渐被忽视.后来人本主义的出现,特别是罗杰斯对自我概念又进行了深入的研究.20世纪80年代后,认知流派对自我概念的研究也很重视.在研究自我概念时,由于认识、方法、人性观及研究取向上的差异,不同学派的心理学者之间同中有异,侧重点有所区别.
