在关于礼之起源的众多说法中，“应天制礼”说最具思想史意味。这一观念肇端于春秋时期，被儒家学者所继承，为礼的制作找到了终极性根源。及至汉代，这一观念又发展出更为丰富的思想层次，董仲舒在赋予天以宇宙总体秩序内涵的基础上，从天道和天命两个角度探讨了“应天制礼”的内在学理。《礼纬》则以董仲舒的学说为理论框架，不但从细节上丰富了“应天制礼”的具体内容，更深入讨论了“应天制礼”的感应模式，甚至还与汉代的礼仪实践产生了互动。
