The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms in summer are frequently accompanied by the succession of phytoplankton communities in freshwater. However, little is known regarding the roles of viruses in the succession, such as in huge reservoirs. Here, we investigated the viral infection characteristics of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton during the summer bloom succession in Xiangxi Bay of Three Gorges Reservoir, China.
