20世纪20年代，顾颉刚开启了孟姜女传说研究，创设了“历史-地理”的研究方法，证实了孟姜女传说的研究价值，此后孟姜女传说研究受到广泛关注，研究视角更加多元，研究成果更加丰富。同时，已有研究存在文化内涵重复解读等问题，表现为未能与中华民族共有精神家园结合起来探讨，导致文化本质解读不够，缺乏更多有力、新颖的见解。此外，传说的中外比较、族群视角、故事角色功能分析、原型理论、表演理论的运用、传说对作家文学的影响等在现有研究中还显得比较薄弱。未来可以从各民族交往交流交融、国际文化交流、文化资源转化、社会主义精神文明建设四个方面的路径进行研究。
