杨维桢曾著《史义拾遗》一书，被四库馆臣归入史部，但书中“补辞”“拟辞”“设辞”之类文章实有别于常规史论，不仅蕴有作者与众不同的历史思考，也包含独特的文学价值。此类补拟文章的创作手法，是通过介入特定的历史现场，借助扮演古人的方式，重审历史旧案，申说《春秋》大义。在论史模式上，既沿袭胡寅、朱熹重视义理的理学家传统，又凭借优孟衣冠作“文学扮演”,展现文学家的趣味。这一系列文章史识独异、文心奇巧、持义严正，具有多重意蕴，并非单纯的游戏笔墨。
