Nerve growth factor (NGF), together with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and and neurotrophins (NT)-3, NT-4/5, belongs to the neurotrophin family. NGF is synthesized by various structural and inflammatory cells, and it also can induce production, proliferation, differentiation and maturation of immuno-inflammatory cells, mediate inflammatory cells recruitment, and stimulate sensory neurons to secrete neuropeptide, especially substance P.
