Economic growth pressure and energy efficiency improvement: Empirical evidence from Chinese cities

This paper adopts the fixed-effects model to estimate Eq. (1), Table 2 reports the baseline estimation results. It can be noted that there is a significant negative correlation between PGDP and CEEI. The greater the PGDP, the more disadvantageous to improve energy efficiency. To be specified, the results find that the energy efficiency development indicator decreased 3.3 percent for each unit increasing PGDP. Economic growth target management has been a typical feature of Chinese governments at all levels for a long time in the past decades. Based on a panel data of 188 Chinese cities, this paper examines the impact of pressure brought by economic growth target on energy efficiency improvement. The results suggest that economic growth pressure has hindered the improvement of energy efficiency.
