关于现代汉语睡眠义双音词“睡觉”的形成，有各种不同说法。通过考察不同历史时期“睡”的语义，对“睡觉”的早期形式进行结构分析，认为睡眠义双音词“睡觉”的成词是在“睡一觉”省略虚化的数词“一”构成的“动+量”结构基础上，受到“名+量”双音词的类化，结为一体，且取得名词性用法的结果。明代中期有较成熟用法。
