Eight hundred and fifty students in the sixth through eighth grade were recruited as participants from two public junior high schools located in rural areas of Eastern China. In these schools, one teacher is customarily assigned for each class to take charge of various aspects of classroom management besides lesson giving, and students in rurally located schools generally return home after school, especially at weekends. Parents and teachers were informed of the aim and procedures of the study.

This study examined (a) the potential mediating roles of effortful control and classroom engagement in the association between harsh parenting and adolescent academic achievement, and (b) the potential moderating role of gender. Sixth through eighth graders in rural China (n = 815, mean age = 12.55 years) reported on harsh parenting, effortful control, and classroom engagement.
