严复在全面译介西方学术思想的同时,又从中国固有的文化资源中寻找与之相通的思想元素,由此他的提出了老子解释史上前所未有的新说,认为有民主与科学的思想,与西方近代以来的政治、哲学思想相通.同时又据西方社会的现实指出文明发展到一定阶段,也会走向其反面,给人类带来严重的祸难,故他的思想中又出现从尊崇西方思想转而回归中国传统文化的倾向.这种融通中西的思路,在今天看来仍有一定的价值.

When translating and introducing works of western thoughts,YAN Fu tried to find out cultural overlap between eastern and western thoughts,hence he advanced a completely new viewpoint in his Lao Zi Review\|There were democratic and scientific thoughts in Lao Zi,which was quite similar with contemporary western politics and philosophy.At the same time,he put forward the opinion that a certain civilization,when developed to a certain extent,would bring forward disaster to the society.Thus his thoughts switched from respecting western t...
