Abstract It is argued in this paper that large numbers of Irish immigrants have come to the United States mainly for the reason of freeing themselves from poverty and hunger. A conflict between Irish culture and American culture is unavoidable. This is because the Irish, on the one hand, have to learn and adapt themselves to the new culture, but on the other hand, they are not willing to give up their own culture.
