张謇系近代中国博览事业的开拓人之一,但过去对张謇在这方面的贡献论述不多.本文从张謇对1903年日本大阪博览会、1906年意大利米兰渔业赛会、1910年南洋劝业会的参观和参与,以及创办南通博物苑等活动,具体说明张謇在推动中国近代博览事业方面的巨大贡献及其对举办近代博览事业的思想主张.本文认为,张謇所从事的近代博览事业,不仅是中国近代化事业的一个重要方面,而且是观察张謇之近代“绅商”、“儒商”性格的一个绝佳视点.
