苏州商会作为商办的民间社团,在民国初期的一系列发展,可以说从一个侧面反映了近代中国民间社会从传统向现代的演变进入到新的历史阶段.其具体表现,不仅仅是苏州商会能够在辛亥革命后政体变更的新形势下,与时俱进地采取新的应对举措和发展措施,从而适应形势发展的需要,而且还不断完善自身的选举制度,使商会的选举与以往相比较更具有广泛性和民主性.此外,苏州商会还积极成立商事公断处等新的机构,在受理商事纠纷方面发挥了更为突出的作用,尤其值得重视的是在"五四运动"等反帝爱国运动中苏州商会的态度更加积极,所产生的作用和影响也更加显著.
