京师同文馆的建立标志着我国近代教育的启动,其英语教学是我国近代英语教学的开端。京师同文馆的英语教学和翻译活动对我国近代外语外交人才培养和翻译事业贡献甚大,培养出中国近代第一批懂得西文、西艺的人才,开创了外语教育和翻译工作相结合的新局面。但是,由于英美侵略势力的控制以及为维护封建统治服务的办学宗旨,京师同文馆的教育受到时代历史、思想观念、教育体制等方面的局限,英语教学并没有取得应有的成绩。
