Is Poetry an Art of Language？： An Exploration into the Text of Poetry

20世纪以来,“文本”作为文学研究的核心概念,其意义发生了戏剧性变化,导致其内涵的模糊性和文学研究对象与疆界的不确定性。本文对英语诗歌文本的质地与结构进行考察,认为：诗歌文本不仅仅由语言构成,诗歌也不仅仅是语言的艺术,构成诗歌文本的元素既有语言符号、语言的物质材料,也有非语言材料;诗歌文本实际上由三个次文本构成,即：文字文本、声音文本、视觉文本。诗歌的三重文本各自的建构策略及其相互关系反映了传统诗歌与现当代诗歌的美学分野,重新审视诗歌文本及其三重次文本的关系,既是理论创新,也是诗歌研究的必然,有助于重新审视和书写诗歌史。

The meaning of ＂Text＂ has dramatically changed since the early 20th century, which has led to ambiguity of its connotation and uncertainty of literary research. In such context, this paper makes an attempt in exploring the nature and texture of the ＂text＂ of poetry, and argues that the text of poetry is made not only of language and thus poetry is not only an art of language, and that instead elements such as lan- guage signs, physical materials of language, and non-linguistic materials all contribute to the construction of the poetic text,...
