2-Amino-5-farfurylidene-4H-imidazolin-4-ones 4 were rapidly prepared by a solution-phase parallel synthetic method, which includes aza-Wittig reaction of iminophosphorane 1 with phenyl isocynate to give carbodiimide 2 and subsequent reaction of 2 with various amine in a parallel fashion.

Novel 2-aryloxy-5-(2-furfurylidene)-4H-imidazolin-4-ones 6 were synthesized by aza-Wittig reaction of vinyliminophosphorane 4 with phenyl isocyanate and subsequent condensation with Various substituted phenols in the presence of catalytic amount of potassium carbonate. The products are confirmed by H-1 NMR, MS, IR and elementary analysis.

4H-Imidazolin-4-ones 3 and 4 were synthesized respectively by base catalytic reactions of 4-methylthiophenol or phenthiol with carbodiimides 2, which were obtained via aza-Wittig reaction of iminophosphorane 1 with aromatic isocyanates. 3 and 4 exhibited good fungicidal activity against Pellicularia sasakii.

Lawesson's reagent, 2,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane-2,4-disufide, reacted with the substituted 1,5-bisphenol 1to afford derivatives of 1,3,2-dioxaphosphocane-2-sulfide 2, which were found to possess selective herbicidal activity against rape.

Aromatic-substituted derivatives of 1,3,2-diazaphospholidin-4-ones 2a-g were readily prepared front 1,3-diaryl glycinamides 1 by the reaction with hexaethylphosphoric triamide. Their chemical transformation was selectively effected with different thionation reagents to afford thionated products at the phosphorus atom to give 3a-g and at the carbonyl group to give 4a. An oxidation reaction at phosphorus to produce 5a was effected with 10% hydrogen peroxide. Preliminary bioassays revealed that some of the title compounds, 2a-g and 3a-g, possess selective herbicidal activity against rape. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The carbodiimides 2, obtained from aza-Wittig reactions of vinylimino-phosphorane 1 with aromatic isocyanates, reacted with aliphatic primary amines to give mainly 2-alkylamino-4H-imidazolin-4-ones 4 with unusual selectivity.

Abstract 2,4-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane-2,4-disulfide (Lawesson's Reagent, LR), was treated with N,N′-diaryl glycinamides (1) in anhydrous toluene as a solvent at 100°C to form 1,3-diaryl-1,3,2-ciazaphospholidin-4-thione-2-sulfides (2) Compatible analytical and spectroscopic data were obtained for all the new compounds. A mechanism was proposed to explain the formation of compound 2f. The biological activity of the title products was also tested and some of them showed good herbicidal activity.

Abstract The derivatives of 4-aryl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane-2-sulfide, namely, 4-aryl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane-2-sulfides (6) were synthesized in moderate yields by the cyclization reaction of 1-aryl-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediols(5) with Lawesson's reagent using acetonitrile as a solvent. 8-Membered cyclic trithiopyrophosphonates (7) were isolated as side-products.
