The standard model of particle physics describes the fundamental particles and their interactions via the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces. It provides precise predictions for measurable quantities that can be tested experimentally. The probabilities, or branching fractions, of the strange B meson (B-s(0)) and the B-0 meson decaying into two oppositely charged muons (mu(+) and mu(-)) are especially interesting because of their sensitivity to theories that extend the standard model. The standard model predicts that the B-s(0)->mu(+)mu(-) and B-0 ->mu(+)mu(-) decays are very rare, with about four of the former occurring for every billion B-s(0) mesons produced, and one of the latter occurring for every ten billion B-0 mesons(1). A difference in the observed branching fractions with respect to the predictions of the standard model would provide a direction in which the standard model should be extended. Before the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN2 started operating, no evidence for either decay mode had been found. Upper limits on the branching fractions were an order of magnitude above the standard model predictions. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and LHCb(Large Hadron Collider beauty) collaborations have performed a joint analysis of the data from proton-proton collisions that they collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of seven teraelectronvolts and in 2012 at eight teraelectronvolts. Here we report the first observation of the B-s(0)->mu(+)mu(-) decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement so far of its branching fraction. Furthermore, we obtained evidence for the B-0 ->mu(+)mu(-) decay with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. Both measurements are statistically compatible with standard model predictions and allow stringent constraints to be placed on theories beyond the standard model. The LHC experiments will resume taking data in 2015, recording proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 teraelectronvolts, which will approximately double the production rates of B-s(0) and B-0 mesons and lead to further improvements in the precision of these crucial tests of the standard model.

In this paper, we investigate a new analytical expression of the centered L-2-discrepancy measure of uniformity for mixed two and three-level U-type designs in depth. Based on this new formulation, we present a new lower bound to the centered L-2-discrepancy for U-type designs with mixed two and three-level, which can be used as a benchmark in searching uniform U-type designs. We also describe a necessary condition for the existence of uniform designs meeting this lower bound. For illustration of the usage of our theoretical results, a catalog of lower bounds for U-type designs in U(n; 2(m1) x 3(m2)) is tabulated, where 0 <= m(1) <= 10, 0 <= m(2) < 25 and 6 <= n < 60. This paper studies the issue of optimal foldover plans for two-level designs in terms of the uniformity criteria measured by Lee, symmetric, wrap-around and centered discrepancy. An algorithm for searching the optimal foldover plans is also developed. New analytical expressions and new lower bounds for the above uniformity criteria of two-level combined designs are obtained. The direct amide synthesis from alcohols and amines is a highly environmentally-benign and atom economic process. In situ generated NHC-based Ru halide catalytic systems are active for the amidation of alcohols with amines. However, these systems show poor activities in the amidation of aldehydes with amines, though aldehydes are the proposed reaction intermediates formed by dehydrogenation of alcohols; imines are obtained as major byproducts in this case. In this study, an improved method was developed by incorporating the idea of using a hemiaminal intermediate as the precatalyst activator, for the direct amide synthesis from aldehydes and amines using a commercially available Ru complex [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2, an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, a base, and pyridine. Using this method, various amides were synthesized from several aldehydes and amines.

In this paper, we consider the following Kirchhoff-type Schrodinger system -(a(1) + b(1) integral(R3) \del u\(2)dx) Delta u + gamma V(x)u = 2 alpha/alpha + beta\u\(alpha-2)u\v\(beta) in R-3, -(a(2) + b(2) integral(R3) \del v\(2)dx) Delta v + gamma W(x)v = 2 beta/alpha + beta\u\(alpha)\v\(beta-2)v in R-3, u, v is an element of H-1(R-3), where a(i) and b(i) are positive constants for i = 1,2, gamma > 0 is a parameter, V(x) and W(x) are nonnegative continuous potential functions. By applying the Nehari manifold method and the concentration-compactness principle, we obtain the existence and concentration of ground state solutions when the parameter gamma is sufficiently large.

Self-assembed microspheres formed from single-crystal alpha-MnO2 nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal treatment of KMnO4 in the hydrochloric acid solution. The effect of the reaction time on the microstructure and morphology of the sample is investigated systemically. Meanwhile, the forming mechanism of nano-structured alpha-MnO2 is carefully studied by X-ray powder diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The MnO2 nanotube microspheres exhibit large reversible capacity up to 807 mA h g(-1) as well as good cycling stability and rate capability, making them promising as anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

In an optical burst switching (OBS) network, the blocking time, representing the time interval during which the channel is occupied for a given class of incoming burst, is a key metric for performance evaluation and traffic shaping. In this paper, we study a horizon-based single-channel multi-class OBS node, for which the multiple traffic classes are differentiated using different offset time of each class. By assuming Poisson burst arrivals and phase-type distributed burst lengths and using the theory of Multi-layer stochastic fluid model, we obtain the Erlangian approximation for the finite time probability of the blocking time for a given class of burst in an OBS node. We further propose an explicit algorithm and procedure to calculate the Erlangian approximation. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the accuracy and the speed of convergence of the proposed method.

Previous studies have reported associations between the functional FABP2 Ala54Thr (rs1799883) polymorphism and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, and metabolic syndrome in different populations with conflicting results. We investigated the association between the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism and T2DM (235 cases, 431 controls), obesity (377 cases, 431 controls), and metabolic syndrome (315 cases, 323 controls) by logistic regression analysis in a Chinese study cohort recruited from Yichang, Hubei Province. We then comprehensively reviewed the association of the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism with T2DM, obesity, and metabolic syndrome via meta-analysis. The strength of association was assessed by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism was significantly associated with obesity (AT vs AA: OR = 2.633, 95%CI = 1.065-6.663, P = 0.036; TT vs AA: OR = 4.160, 95%CI = 1.609-10.757, P = 0.003) and metabolic syndrome (TT vs AA: OR = 2.273, 95%CI = 1.242-4.156, P = 0.008) by logistic regression with adjustment for covariates. However, no significant association was found between T2DM and the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism. We identified 24 studies on T2DM (4517 cases, 5224 controls), 9 studies on obesity (949 cases, 2002 controls), and 6 studies on metabolic syndrome (2194 cases, 3282 controls) by literature search. The meta-analyses revealed significant associations for metabolic syndrome (T allele: OR = 1.179, 95%CI = 1.015-1.362, P = 0.031) and T2DM (T allele: OR = 1.160, 95%CI = 1.08-1.24, P < 0.001), but no association for obesity (T allele: OR = 1.069, 95%CI = 0.925-1.235, P = 0.367).

We investigate the low transverse momentum heavy quarkonium ( J/ψ, ϒ) productions in the forward rapidity region of pp and pA collisions at the LHC as an important probe to the transverse momentum tomography of the gluons in hadrons in the color glass condensate (CGC) framework. By implementing the Sudakov resummation consistently in the CGC formalism, we achieve an excellent agreement between the improved CGC calculations and the LHC data. We show that both the small- x and the Sudakov effects are essential for a complete description of heavy quarkonium productions in the low transverse momentum region. This provides a solid foundation to study the small- x gluon saturation in a big nucleus with the future pA programs at the LHC.

We review results from lattice QCD calculations on the thermodynamics of strong-interaction matter with emphasis on input these calculations can provide to the exploration of the phase diagram and properties of hot and dense matter created in heavy ion experiments.
