Centering on the precarious bodies that are diseased or faced with health problems in Danticat's oeuvre, this article from a biopolitical perspective examines how the malfunction of power exacerbates the health condition of individuals, and how those precarious bodies both expose the existing problems in Haiti's health management and provide enlightenment to its improvement. This article argues that external causes of the diseased or health-threatened bodies in Danticat's writing can be attributed to the abuse, misuse, or absence of authoritative power in health management, including the state's inefficiency in managing people's health and security, the neglect in environmental protection, and the authorities' abuse of medical power, which demonstrate Danticat's denunciation of the Haitian authoritative power's inaction in health management and her appeals for urgent measures to be taken to improve people's health. This article contributes to the discussions surrounding the disease narrative and health issues in Danticat's writing, enhances people's understanding of Haitian health issues from a non-Euro-American-centric lens, and enriches the research on biopolitical theories of health.

Background: Previous studies have examined the gender and geographic diversity within editorial boards across various academic disciplines, excluding the field of education. Thus, the purpose of this study was to address this gap by investigating the extent of gender and geographic disparity within the editorial boards of education journals. Methods: The selection of top five education journals from each quartile (Q1–Q4) was performed based on Clarivate Analytics’ Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2021 within the category of “Education & Educational Research.” The information of editors was collected through online sources. Results: Overall, female editors accounted for 17 out of the 29 editors-in-chief (58.62%), 36 out of the 64 deputy/associate editors (56.25%), 378 out of the 728 editorial/advisory board members (51.92%) and 15 out of the 28 other types of editors (53.57%). There was no significant association between the impact factor (IF) and the proportion of female editors (Pearson’s r = −0.095, p = 0.689). The United States had the highest number of editors (n = 459, 54.06%), followed by the United Kingdom (n = 98, 11.54%), Australia (n = 63, 7.42%), China (n = 29, 3.42%), Germany (n = 25, 2.94%), and Canada (n = 22, 2.59%). Notably, the majority of the included editors were from developed countries (n = 794, 93.52%), while editors from developing countries constituted a significantly smaller proportion (n = 55, 6.48%). Conclusion: Editorial boards of education journals exhibit reasonable gender diversity than other disciplines, though still fall short when considering the proportion of women in the discipline. Besides, obvious geographical disparity was observed among editorial boards of education journals. There was a notable lack of representation of researchers associated with institutions from developing countries on the editorial boards of education journals. While maintaining sufficient gender diversity, it is imperative to enhance the geographical diversity in these journals, ensuring a more equitable number of positions to individuals from these underrepresented groups.

Visuals in environmental communication can potentially shape the public perception of environmental issues. They are frequently used in corporate communication in sustainability reports to construct environmentally responsible corporate images. This study analyzes the images used in the sections addressing climate change in the sustainability reports of an international petroleum mega-business from 2018 to 2022. Based on the theoretical framework of ecolinguistics and multimodal critical discourse analysis, the present study investigates how the motifs constructed in the reports' visual narratives legitimize the energy industry with various discursive strategies in relation to the underlying anthropocentric ecosophy. Four main motifs in the visual narratives are identified, including uniformed employees, the high-tech (clear) energy industry, unspoiled nature, and public signage with evaluative meanings. These motifs are represented through the discursive strategies of salience, erasure, and evaluation, which are operationalized through the praxis of collectivization, individualization, decontextualization, and aestheticization. The real causes and impacts of climate change are discursively erased, and the energy-exploiting and environmentally polluting industry is techno-optimistically aestheticized and romanticized in tackling climate change and actively contributing to idyllic and unspoiled nature. The present research is hoped to shed light on the analyses of corporate environmental communication in the current era where ecology is increasingly valued, and it may also help raise viewers' critical awareness of institutional ecological discourses.

Highly cited papers showcase high-quality research and encompass significant themes in the field. This study examined a total of 435 highly cited papers based on Essential Citation Indicators in the Web of Science (WoS) category of sport sciences with a bibliometric method. In particular, the bibliometric indicators of the highly cited papers including publication venues, authors, countries, institutions, and the top cited publications were presented and analyzed in detail. An Abstract corpus was constructed to help identify the most frequently explored topics. VOSviewer was employed to visualize the co-occurrence networks of keywords. The study revealed the trending information of important contributors at the levels of journals, authors, countries, and institutes. The top cited publications can be grouped into three categories: guidelines, recommendations based on systematic reviews, and evaluations. The most frequently explored topics based on the Abstract corpus and the most frequently used keywords from VOSviewer mapping overlap to a great extent. Specifically, topics such as meta-analysis, systematic review, sport-related concussion, sedentary behavior, football, rehabilitation, and osteoarthritis are among the most frequently mentioned. The results provide the most updated publication characteristics and hot topics of highly cited papers in sport sciences and offer insights for academic researchers in future research. What are the top cited papers in the area of sport sciences? What are the publication characteristics of these highly cited papers? What are the most frequently explored topics? Researchers in the areas of sports and its neighboring disciplines are keen to find the answers. Employing the Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) as a theoretical framework, this study explores the interconnectedness of cognitive and affective components within the Willingness to Communicate (WTC) among eight undergraduate students in a university classroom in China. The eight students were divided into four pairs, engaging in a communication task in English, followed by self-ratings of WTC using software and stimulated recall interviews. Interconnectedness was examined on a per-second basis. Analysis of these interconnected interactions revealed five patterns across three states of WTC. Among the rising, stable, and declining states of WTC, cognitive issues (e.g., discrepancy in viewpoints, vocabulary retrieval, self-monitoring) dynamically interacted with affective instances (e.g., anger, excitement, and emotional dependence on the partner), influencing the pattern of interconnectedness. The findings suggest that interconnectedness in WTC exhibits reciprocal interaction and nonlinearity. Speculation within these intricate cognitive-affective interactions suggests that affective components may have a greater influence on determining the level of L2 WTC. These insights highlight the dynamic interplay between WTC components and the system as a whole, revealing their uneven influence on the WTC system.

Studies on critical literacy (CL) have progressed, encompassing diverse contexts and intersecting with education. Pioneering contributions from Freebody and Luke (1990), as well as more recent perspectives from Lewison et al. (2002), Bishop (2014), and Paul (2022), elucidate framework dimensions and pedagogical applications in classrooms. However, scant attention is given to CL within teacher education (TE) literature. The book, Enhancing Educators’ Theoretical and Practical Understandings of CL, pilots a CL pedagogical practice framework (CLPPF) in TE, fortified by actionable survey tenets, activities, and case studies. As a research-based book, it aims to enhance CL capacities of pre-service teachers and promote evidence-based changes towards equitable and just teaching. The volume forges a link between theory and practice, offering reflective and autoethnographic tools to engage pre-service teachers in CL praxis, and contributes to expanding language teacher educator research through a lens of CL.
A component of the Cambridge Elements series on Critical Issues in Teacher Education, the 10-chapter book begins with an introductory section. Chapters 2–4 present Lewison et al’.s (2002) CL framework and CLPPF. Chapters 5–9 actualize the aforementioned frameworks in TE praxis. Chapter 10 serves as a conclusion, shedding light on future research orientations.

Semantic and affective priming have long been treated separately in psycholinguistic studies. Recently, however, the question of whether and how these two primings interact has become controversial, especially in cross-language contexts where such discussions are rare. In the present study, four mixed-design experiments were conducted with Chinese EFL learners to investigate cross-language semantic-affective interactions: 3 (prime valence: negative, positive, neutral) x 2 (semantic relatedness: related, unrelated). Results show that semantic priming effects occurred in the L1L1 and L1L2 conditions, whereas affective priming effects were observed in the L2L2 condition. In the L2L1 priming condition, only emotion primes induced cross-language priming. These results suggest that semantic and emotional accesses are activated automatically and separately, but can facilitate cross-language word processing mutually. The results support the hierarchical representation of semantic features of emotion words from L1 to L2 in the unbalanced bilingual mental lexicon, while affective attributes are spread across a distributed network.
