摘要:
Centering on the precarious bodies that are diseased or faced with health problems in Danticat's oeuvre, this article from a biopolitical perspective examines how the malfunction of power exacerbates the health condition of individuals, and how those precarious bodies both expose the existing problems in Haiti's health management and provide enlightenment to its improvement. This article argues that external causes of the diseased or health-threatened bodies in Danticat's writing can be attributed to the abuse, misuse, or absence of authoritative power in health management, including the state's inefficiency in managing people's health and security, the neglect in environmental protection, and the authorities' abuse of medical power, which demonstrate Danticat's denunciation of the Haitian authoritative power's inaction in health management and her appeals for urgent measures to be taken to improve people's health. This article contributes to the discussions surrounding the disease narrative and health issues in Danticat's writing, enhances people's understanding of Haitian health issues from a non-Euro-American-centric lens, and enriches the research on biopolitical theories of health.

Using Systemic Functional Grammar and conceptual framework in the argumentation-oriented approach to discourse, this study analyzes Chinese central government’s “ Report on the Work of the Government” in 2020 (henceforth the Report) to explore the “interpersonal-function topoi” in the political discourse. The Report was delivered and issued against the backdrop of the surging covid-19 epidemic. This study first calculated the frequency of mood, modality and persons in the Report. The statistics were qualitatively analyzed in relation to various topoi-imagery of the crisis vis-à-vis representing the agency-reflected in the interpersonal metafunction of the language in the Report. These topoi play a vital role in winning popular support for the Chinese central government’s anti-epidemic measures and mobilizing the widest public into actions against the covid-19 pandemic. The analysis demonstrates how the analysis of interpersonal metafunction from an argumentation-oriented perspective can shed light on dealing with crisis discourse, especially in the pandemic settings.

Abstract Focusing on The Farming of Bones, Brother, I'm Dying, and the short story “Night Talkers” collected in The Dew Breaker, this article explores how Edwidge Danticat engages with the biopolitics of race in her writing. The biopolitics of race traumatizes people through racial discrimination, exclusion, and purification; in Danticat's works, this is manifested in atrocities inflicted on Haitian workers, the exclusion of asylum seekers, and the deportation of Haitian descendants. Those racially excluded people resist the destructive effects of state racism by creating testimonial narratives to record crimes and atrocities, or by establishing communities for mutual support. Through the dynamics of biopolitical oppression and resistance, Danticat empowers those precarious people and achieves her purpose of political writing: while dissolving the negative influence of biopolitics, she reconstructs individual subjectivities through testimony, and rebuilds fragmented identities through the solidarity of Haitian communities, in order to reaffirm the national identity of the Haitian people.

摘要:
Multimodal News Analysis across Cultures adopts the framework of “discursive news value analysis” (DNVA) to probe news values. It employs the approach of corpus-assisted multimodal discourse analysis (CAMDA) to illustrate how news values are approached from a linguistic perspective; how corpus linguistic techniques are applied to the analysis of news values; and how news values are constructed through different semiotic resources (language and image) in two different cultural contexts by investigating the similar national events across two countries, that is, the National Days of China and that of Australia.

The goal of this paper is to offer an analysis of cyberpunk, steampunk, and other genre names related via the punk element. We study the emergence and popularity of these names among science fiction fans and scholars, comparing them with “mainstream” appreciators. We carry out a corpus study that analyses data extracted from textual corpora in four languages (English, German, French, and Italian) and encyclopedias (fandom communities, e.g., Aesthetics Wiki). We show that the proliferation of punk genre names tends to be closely related to science fiction and other (fan-)fiction communities, who display an emotive and intellectual investment in punk subgenres. We propose an analysis via a frame-theoretical model that shows how cyberpunk and related genre names can describe the core narrative themes of each subgenre. We then propose that punk genre names form sets of near-synonym words via their ability to describe fictional narratives featuring anti-authoritarian protagonists across different world settings and technologies. We conclude by discussing the consequences of our account for possible theories of genres, genre names, and linguistic studies focusing on science fiction and other fictional genres.

摘要:
“Mythorealism” is a formal literary experiment developed by Yan Lianke, whose 2008 novel Ballad, Hymn, Ode (Feng ya song) produces a cumulative effect of absurdity that has provoked controversy over the extent to which it offers an effective social critique. In response to the scholarship based on realist readings of the novel, this article analyzes it from a “mythorealistic” perspective. It argues that the mythorealist narrative does not necessarily cancel out Yan’s social commentary but instead transfers his critical impulse to a psychological exploration of marginal intellectuals in a desymbolized society. In particular, this article is concerned with thematic interpretation and the relation between literary form and meaning in Yan’s parody of the Shijing in Ballad, Hymn, Ode. By focusing on Yan’s symbolic representation of sex and disgust, this article investigates how such imagery and motifs speak from their own space to reveal Chinese intellectuals’ spiritual crisis in an academic world pervaded with an instrumentalist ethos.

This corpus-assisted ecolinguistic study examines the representation of the northward migration of a herd of Asian elephants in China’s official English-language media. The analysis reveals that the Asian elephants’ northward migration is conceptualized as a journey and an exodus. The Asian elephants in the news are represented in a mixed way: both as babies and villains. The authorities are portrayed in the news coverage as heroes: responsible protectors and resourceful problem-solvers. Locals are constructed as environmentally conscious friends, in contrast to an earlier image as victims. Based on [Stibbe, A. 2021. Ecolinguistics: Language, Ecology and the Stories We Live By. 2nd ed. London: Routledge, 14] ecosophy of “Living!”, the representation of Asian elephants is seen as anthropocentric and problematic in some respects. However, the prominence given to nonhuman reports in the official media has a positive effect on raising public awareness of wildlife conservation. Therefore, the series of reports is considered an ambivalent discourse. Those responsible for the discourse play a major role in the presentation of the natural world and the promotion of beneficial discourses. In essence, the use of discursive resources by the official media is in line with the prevailing ideology of ecological civilization in China, which in the meantime serves to build a positive image of the country in the international community.

Situating affect in the soundscapes of suona as a Chinese musical instrument in various media, this study investigates how these mediated soundscapes shape social ideologies, hierarchies of cultures, and social resistance in ancient and contemporary China. Several mediated soundscapes are tapped into, including (1) the poem titled “To the Tune of Seeing the Emperor-Ode to the Trumpet”; (2) a TV program demonstrating how suona can be “languaging” in localized contexts; (3) a famous movie titled “Song of the Phoenix” capturing the contestation of affective regimes represented by the Chinese conventional versus the Western modern; (4) works of a well-known rock band, the Second-Hand Rose, showing how two differing affective regimes were conflated. In examining these mediated soundscapes, this study showcases how stratifications of cultures as the high versus the low, the conventional versus the modern, vernacularism versus globalism are constructed, resisted, and transmuted via competition and conflation of affective regimes in Chinese media.
