This paper is a review on recent developments of the toxicological and physiological studies on formaldehyde.Hotspots involved in this topic include: (1) Formaldehyde-induced gene expression; (2) Formaldehyde-induced asthma; (3) Airway neurogenic inflammation (4) formaldehyde working as signaling molecule in body;, (5)Epigenesis: methylation of DNA and proteins; (6) DNA-protein crosslink; (7) Lysine-DPC repair enzyme; (8)Formaldehyde-induced Apoptosis.

Tobacco hydroxyproline-rich glycopeptide systemin precursor A (TobpreproHypSys-A), from which TobHypSys I and II are released, plays a crucial role in defense responses. Here, we investigated the expression of TobpreproHypSys-A and the activity of defense proteins in tobacco organs during wounding. Expression was induced more rapidly in upper, non-wounded leaves than in lower, wounded leaves. At 24 h after mechanical wounding, expression was low in the roots, but increased in the stems and flowers, although to a lesser extent than in the leaves. At 3 or 10 d after insect-wounding, expression did not differ among organs, suggesting that TobpreproHypSys-A could be induced globally and continuously throughout such stress. During that period, the activity of two defense proteins -- PPO and PI -- was consistent with the expression of TobpreproHypSys-A in various organs. This indicates that those proteins also could be regulated by TobHypSys, both globally and continuously.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major causative organisms of meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia. The drug resistance of S.pneumoniae to antibiotics showed ascending tendency. The present study cloned the full-length HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR) gene of S.pneumoniae and expressed in E.coli BL21 (DE3). The His-tag containing recombinant protein was purified by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography. Statins represent a kind of excellent competing inhibitor targeted for the class Ι HMG-CoA reductase, but were relatively poor to the class II enzyme of important bacterial pathogens. In order to develop new inhibitors with more specific and stronger function targeted for the class II HMG-CoA reductase, the 3D model of S.pneumoniae HMG-CoAR was built based on structure template of HMGR of Pseudomonas mevalonii by homology modeling using composer module of SYBYL7.0 program.

The crystal structure of the title compound, C14H11NO4, is influenced by N - H⋯O and O - H⋯O hydrogen bonds, linking mol-ecules into one-dimensional tapes running along the [010] direction.
