摘要：
Animal-mediated seed dispersal is very important for plant population regeneration and the stability of forest ecosystems. Seed size and cache density are important factors for seed dispersal, but we still know little about seed size selection at different cache densities. Here, we conducted field experiments in a Larix principis-rupprechtii plantation in the Liupan Mountains in Ningxia province to investigate the effects of tag-marked Quercus wutaishanica seeds of different sizes and cache densities on predation and the scatter-hoarding behavior of rodents. The results showed lower proportions of intact in situ (IIS) and eaten in situ (EIS) large seeds than small seeds at all levels of cache density, with the exception of IIS seeds at a 6.25 seed center dot m(-2) cache density. A higher proportion of small seeds were eaten after removal (EAR), but a higher proportion of large seeds were scatter-hoarded (SH) by rodents at most cache densities. Furthermore, rodents preferentially removed large seeds farther away for eating or scatter-hoarding. The IIS and EIS proportions of both large and small seeds declined, but the proportion of the two types of seeds that were EAR fluctuated, increasing with increasing cache density. Rodents preferred to increase the proportion of scatter-hoarding of large seeds with increasing cache density, whereas the proportion of scatter-hoarding of small seeds was maximized at a cache density of 6.25 seed center dot m(-2). Both the eaten distance after removal (EDAR) and scatter-hoarded distance (SHD) increased with increasing cache density. These results suggest that large seeds are more likely to be scatter-hoarded and removed to longer distances than small ones. Rodents tended to reduce the seed proportion of EIS seeds and increased the proportion of seeds EAR and SH, and accordingly increased EDAR and SHD with increasing cache density. This study provides some scientific basis for animal-mediated seed dispersal.

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) consist of a single or few layers of graphene sheets or modified graphene including pristine graphene, graphene nanosheets (GNS), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as well as graphene modified with various functional groups or chemicals (e.g., hydroxyl, carboxyl, and polyethylene glycol), which are frequently used in industrial and biomedical applications owing to their exceptional physicochemical properties. Given the widespread production and extensive application of GBNs, they can be disseminated in a wide range of environmental mediums, such as air, water, food, and soil. GBNs can enter the human body through various routes such as inhalation, ingestion, dermal penetration, injection, and implantation in biomedical applications, and the majority of GBNs tend to accumulate in the respiratory system. GBNs inhaled and substantially deposited in the human respiratory tract may impair lung defenses and clearance, resulting in the formation of granulomas and pulmonary fibrosis. However, the specific toxicity of the respiratory system caused by different GBNs, their influencing factors, and the underlying mechanisms remain relatively scarce. This review summarizes recent advances in the exposure, metabolism, toxicity and potential mechanisms, current limitations, and future perspectives of various GBNs in the respiratory system.

The most significant driver of adaptive radiation in the New World leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) is their remarkably diverse feeding habits, yet there remains a notable scarcity of studies addressing the genetic underpinnings of dietary diversification in this family. In this study, we have assembled a new genome for a representative species of phyllostomid bat, the fringe-lipped bat (Trachops cirrhosis), and integrated it with eight published phyllostomid genomes, along with an additional 10 genomes of other bat species. Comparative genomic analysis across 10 200 orthologus genes has unveiled that those genes subject to divergent selection within the Phyllostomidae clade are notably enriched in metabolism-related pathways. Furthermore, we identified molecular signatures of divergent selection in the bitter receptor gene Tas2r1, as well as 14 genes involved in digesting key nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. In addition, our cell-based functional assays conducted on Tas2r1 showed a broader spectrum of perception for bitter compounds in phyllostomids compared to nonphyllostomid bats, suggesting functional diversification of bitter taste in Phyllostomidae. Together, our genomic and functional analyses lead us to propose that divergent selection of genes associated with taste, digestion and absorption, and metabolism assumes a pivotal role in steering the extreme dietary diversification in Phyllostomidae. This study not only illuminates the genetic mechanisms underlying dietary adaptations in Phyllostomidae bats but also enhances our understanding of their extraordinary adaptive radiation. Drought stress impairs crop growth and development. BEL1-like family transcription factors may be involved in plant response to drought stress, but little is known of the molecular mechanism by which these proteins regulate plant response and defense to drought stress. Here we show that the BEL1-like transcription factor GhBLH5-A05 functions in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) response and defense to drought stress. Expression of GhBLH5-A05 in cotton was induced by drought stress. Overexpression of GhBLH5-A05 in both Arabidopsis and cotton increased drought tolerance, whereas silencing GhBLH5A05 in cotton resulted in elevated sensitivity to drought stress. GhBLH5-A05 binds to cis elements in the promoters of GhRD20-A09 and GhDREB2C-D05 to activate the expression of these genes. GhBLH5A05 interacted with the KNOX transcription factor GhKNAT6-A03. Co -expression of GhBLH5-A05 and GhKNAT6-A03 increased the transcription of GhRD20-A09 and GhDREB2C-D05. We conclude that GhBLH5-A05 acts as a regulatory factor with GhKNAT6-A03 functioning in cotton response to drought stress by activating the expression of the drought-responsive genes GhRD20-A09 and GhDREB2C-D05. Gut bacteria are beneficial to the host, many of which must be passed on to host offspring. During metamorphosis, the midgut of holometabolous insects undergoes histolysis and remodeling, and thus risks losing gut bacteria. Strategies employed by holometabolous insects to minimize this risk are obscure. How gut bacteria affect host insects after entering the hemocoel and causing opportunistic infections remains largely elusive. We used holometabolous Helicoverpa armigera as a model and found low Lactobacillus load, high level of a C-type lectin (CTL) gene CD209 antigen-like protein 2 (CD209) and its downstream lysozyme 1 (Lys1) in the midgut of the wandering stage. CD209 or Lys1 depletion increased the load of midgut Lactobacillus, which further translocate to the hemocoel. In particular, CD209 or Lys1 depletion, injection of Lactobacillus plantarum, or translocation of midgut L. plantarum into the hemocoel suppressed 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling and delayed pupariation. Injection of L. plantarum decreased triacylglycerol and cholesterol storage, which may result in insufficient energy and 20E available for pupariation. Further, Lysine-type peptidoglycan, the major component of gram-positive bacterial cell wall, contributed to delayed pupariation and decreased levels of triacylglycerols, cholesterols, and 20E, in both H. armigera and Drosophila melanogaster. A mechanism by which (Lactobacillus-induced) opportunistic infections delay insect metamorphosis was found, namely by disturbing the homeostasis of lipid metabolism and reducing 20E production. Moreover, the immune function of CTL − Lys was characterized for insect metamorphosis by maintaining gut homeostasis and limiting the opportunistic infections.

摘要：
Although antibiotic alternatives are widely used in livestock and poultry breeding industry after in-feed antibiotics ban, their intervention effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in these food animals' feces remain poorly understood. Here effects of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and astragalus polysaccharide (APS), as typical antibiotic alternatives in China, on ARGs in layer feces were estimated by performing metagenomic sequencings and fluorescence quantitative PCR. Fructooligosaccharide significantly reduced sum abundance of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) by increasing Lactobacillus clones and reducing Escherichia clones which had relatively higher abundances of ARG subtypes and MGE subtypes in layer feces. However, at least parts of core ARGs and MGEs categories were not reduced by FOS, such as aminoglycosides- and tetracyclines-resistant genes, Tn916, Integrase, and so on. MGEs and microbiome, especially Escherichia genus and Lactobacillus genus, were the key factors affecting ARGs' sum abundance. MGEs had a higher correlation coefficient with ARGs' sum abundance than Escherichia genus and Lactobacillus genus. These findings firstly reveal the defects of antibiotic alternatives in controlling bacterial resistance in livestock and poultry breeding after in-feed antibiotics ban, and more strategies are needed to control pollutions and risks of core ARGs and MGEs in food animals' feces under a special environment.

To fully harness the potential of laccase in the efficient decolorization and detoxification of single and mixed dyes with diverse chemical structures, we carried out a systematic study on the decolorization and detoxification of single and mixed dyes using a crude laccase preparation obtained from a white-rot fungus strain, Pleurotus eryngii. The crude laccase preparation showed efficient decolorization of azo, anthraquinone, triphenylmethane, and indigo dyes, and the reaction rate constants followed the order Remazol Brilliant Blue R > Bromophenol blue > Indigo carmine > New Coccine > Reactive Blue 4 > Reactive Black 5 > Acid Orange 7 > Methyl green. This laccase preparation exhibited notable tolerance to SO(4)(2-) salts such as MnSO(4), MgSO(4), ZnSO(4), Na(2)SO(4), K(2)SO(4), and CdSO(4) during the decolorization of various types of dyes, but was significantly inhibited by Cl(-) salts. Additionally, this laccase preparation demonstrated strong tolerance to some organic solvents such as glycerol, ethylene glycol, propanediol, and butanediol. The crude laccase preparation demonstrated the efficient decolorization of dye mixtures, including azo + azo, azo + anthraquinone, azo + triphenylmethane, anthraquinone + indigo, anthraquinone + triphenylmethane, and indigo + triphenylmethane dyes. The decolorization kinetics of mixed dyes provided preliminary insight into the interactions between dyes in the decolorization process of mixed dyes, and the underlying reasons and mechanisms were discussed. Importantly, the crude laccase from Pleurotus eryngii showed efficient repeated-batch decolorization of single-, two-, and four-dye mixtures. This crude laccase demonstrated high stability and reusability in repeated-batch decolorization. Furthermore, this crude laccase was efficient in the detoxification of different types of single dyes and mixed dyes containing different types of dyes, and the phytotoxicity of decolorized dyes (single and mixed dyes) was significantly reduced. The crude laccase efficiently eliminated phytotoxicity associated with single and mixed dyes. Consequently, the crude laccase from Pleurotus eryngii offers significant potential for practical applications in the efficient decolorization and management of single and mixed dye pollutants with different chemical structures.

Water molecules are actively involved in many catalytic oxidation processes, which require the construction of highly active sites for their activation to accelerate the reaction rate, especially over non-noble metal catalysts. Herein, K species is embeded into the natural 2*2 channel of alpha-MnO2 by a hydrothermal coupled molten salt method, which would make these K species behave in an electron-rich state and provide more electrons for the activation of water molecules. Compared with surface K modification (namely, the electron-deficient K species), channel K confinement can lower the activation energy barrier of H2O dissociation on alpha-MnO2 to generate hydroxyl species with more nucleophilic oxygen atoms, contributing to the superior HCHO catalytic oxidation activity with a fourfold enhancement. The internal relationship among the confined channel, K species, and catalytic performance is systematically elucidated at the molecular level. This work offers a new ion confinement method and opens up new avenues to construct electron-rich metal sites with channel structures for the activation of water molecules.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are common environmental pollutants and may degrade differently with different resulting biotoxicity, when present together. This study investigated the toxicological effects of singular or combined exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in KM mice. Results indicated that combined exposure led to slower weight gain and an increased leukocyte count in the blood, as well as liver tissue lesions and downregulation of organ coefficients. Additionally, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were elevated in the liver, and glucose, pyruvate, triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (T-CHO) were significantly reduced, suggesting compromised liver function. Furthermore, mRNA levels of genes related to hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism were significantly altered. These findings suggest that combined exposure to DBP and MWCNTs can have severe impacts on liver function in mice, highlighting the importance of considering interactions between multiple contaminants in environmental risk assessments.

Doppler shift compensation (DSC) is a unique feature observed in certain species of echolocating bats and is hypothesized to be an adaptation to detecting fluttering insects. However, current research on DSC has primarily focused on bats that are not engaged in foraging activities. In this study, we investigated the DSC performance of Pratt's roundleaf bat, Hipposideros pratti, which was trained to pursue insects in various motion states within a laboratory setting. Our study yielded three main results. First, H. pratti demonstrated highly precise DSC during insect pursuit, aligning with previous findings of other flutter-detecting foragers during orientation or landing tasks. Second, we found that the motion state of the insect prey had little effect on the DSC performance of H. pratti. Third, we observed variations in the DSC performance of H. pratti throughout the course of insect pursuit. The bats exhibited the highest DSC performance during the phase of maximum flight speed but decreased performance during the phase of insect capture. These findings of high precision overall and the time-dependent performance of DSC during insect pursuit support the hypothesis that DSC is an adaptation to detecting fluttering insects.

The aggregation of amyloid-beta (A beta) is one of the important pathological markers of Alzheimer's disease. Ruthenium(ii) complexes have good stability, low cytotoxicity, a high fluorescence quantum yield, and a good Stokes shift as fluorescent probes. Based on this, we constructed a fluorescent probe for in vivo real-time imaging and inhibition of A beta-fibril formation using a complex of Ru polypyridine with organic fluorophores (N,N-dimethylaniline) and hydrophobic peptides (KLVFF). DLS and TEM studies have shown that Ru-YH has an inhibitory effect on the fibrotic aggregation of A beta. Both in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that Ru-WJ and Ru-YH can quickly cross the blood-brain barrier and successfully detect A beta in early (2.5-month old) transgenic mouse models. In summary, we have explored the potential of Ru complex based biological probes for early diagnosis and inhibition of AD. Two Ru complexes, Ru-WJ and Ru-YH, were designed and synthesized to detect A beta aggregates at an early AD stage. Ru-WJ and Ru-YH could quickly cross the BBB of young AD mice. Ru-YH can also inhibit the growth of A beta.

Colpoda are cosmopolitan unicellular eukaryotes primarily inhabiting soil and benefiting plant growth, but they remain one of the least understood taxa in genetics and genomics within the realm of ciliated protozoa. Here, we investigate the architecture of de novo assembled mitogenomes of six Colpoda species, using long-read sequencing and involving 36 newly isolated natural strains in total. The mitogenome sizes span from 43 to 63 kbp and typically contain 28-33 protein-coding genes. They possess a linear structure with variable telomeres and central repeats, with one Colpoda elliotti strain isolated from Tibet harboring the longest telomeres among all studied ciliates. Phylogenomic analyses reveal that Colpoda species started to diverge more than 326 million years ago, eventually evolving into two distinct groups. Collinearity analyses also reveal significant genomic divergences and a lack of long collinear blocks. One of the most notable features is the exceptionally high level of gene rearrangements between mitochondrial genomes of different Colpoda species, dominated by gene loss events. Population-level mitogenomic analysis on natural strains also demonstrates high sequence divergence, regardless of geographic distance, but the gene order remains highly conserved within species, offering a new species identification criterion for Colpoda species. Furthermore, we identified underlying heteroplasmic sites in the majority of strains of three Colpoda species, albeit without a discernible recombination signal to account for this heteroplasmy. This comprehensive study systematically unveils the mitogenomic structure and evolution of these ancient and ecologically significant Colpoda ciliates, thus laying the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the evolution of unicellular eukaryotes.IMPORTANCEColpoda, one of the most widespread ciliated protozoa in soil, are poorly understood in regard to their genetics and evolution. Our research revealed extreme mitochondrial gene rearrangements dominated by gene loss events, potentially leading to the streamlining of Colpoda mitogenomes. Surprisingly, while interspecific rearrangements abound, our population-level mitogenomic study revealed a conserved gene order within species, offering a potential new identification criterion. Phylogenomic analysis traced their lineage over 326 million years, revealing two distinct groups. Substantial genomic divergence might be associated with the lack of extended collinear blocks and relaxed purifying selection. This study systematically reveals Colpoda ciliate mitogenome structures and evolution, providing insights into the survival and evolution of these vital soil microorganisms.

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii-dominated harmful algae blooms (HABs) have been reported globally in recent years. However, our understanding of the ecology of C. raciborskii in natural conditions is still poor. In this study, we collected the water samples from a C. raciborskii-blooming lake, Yilong Lake, in Yunnan province, China, and used both culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches to investigate their microbial communities and the interactions between C. raciborskii and the other bacteria. The composition and diversity of microbial communities were revealed with 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing data analysis. Microbial co-occurrences analysis suggests C. raciborskii may have complex associations with other bacteria. Based on co-inoculation tests, we obtained 14 strains of bacterial strains from the water samples that exhibited either algicidal or promoting effects on a strain of C. raciborskii. Two bacterial isolates exhibited a consistent performance between co-occurrence analysis and experimental result. Effects of these bacteria-algae interspecies interactions on the bloom event were discussed. All these results may shed new insights into the C. raciborskii-dominated blooms and how its interspecies relationships with other bacteria may influence the bloom events in eutrophic waters over the world.

Rapid urbanization has caused a series of environmental problems, but its influences on animal-related ecological functions (e.g., seed dispersal) have not been fully studied. Mammals are ideal models for studying the functional consequences of urbanization because they are sensitive to environmental changes. It is well known that large- and medium-sized mammals are vulnerable in fragmentation ecosystem. However, little is known about the functional responses of small mammals (e.g., rodents) to the rapid urbanization. Using infrared cameras and tagged seeds, here, we quantified mammals and mammal-mediated seed dispersal (i.e., Quercus variabilis) in 11 forest patches along city-suburb-exurban gradient in a rapidly urbanizing megacity, central China. We wanted to determine the effects of defaunation on seed dispersal in the isolated urban forests. The results showed that abundance of seed dispersers was higher in the natural exurban forests than in the city forests, while abundance of seed predators did not vary significantly along the city-suburb-exurban gradient. The percentage of seed dispersal was positively associated with the abundance seed dispersers, while the percentage of seed predation increased with the abundance of seed predators. Seed dispersers loss (e.g., small rodents) disrupted the mammal-mediated seed dispersal, possibly contributing to the degradation of urbanized forests. These results suggest that defaunation effects are obvious in the rapidly urbanizing cities, in that abundance of seed dispersers, and mammal-mediated seed dispersal are undergoing decline in the urbanized forests. In order to maintain seed dispersal and natural regeneration of urban forests, diversity of small mammals (e.g., rodents) and their ecological services should be considered in ecological-based urban planning and management.

Previous studies have reported the association between particulate matter (PM) and childhood allergic rhinitis (AR). However, it is unclear whether food allergy (FA) modifies the PM-AR association. We aimed at evaluating the effect of the modification of FA on PM-AR association in preschool children. We adopted a cross-sectional study and conducted a questionnaire survey among preschool children aged 3-6 years in 7 cities in China from June 2019 to June 2020 to collect information on AR and FA. We used a combination of multilevel logistic regression and restricted cubic spline functions to quantitatively assess whether FA modifies the associations between size-specific PM exposure (1 × 1 km) and the risk of AR. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for AR among the children with FA as per a 10 μg/m(3) increase in early life PM(1), PM(2.5), and PM(10) were significantly higher than the corresponding ORs among the children without FA [e.g., OR: 1.58, 95% CI: (1.32, 1.90) vs 1.29, 95% CI: (1.18, 1.41), per 10 μg/m(3) increase in PM(1)]. The interactions between FA and size-specific PM exposure and their effects on AR were statistically significant (all p-int < 0.001). FA, as an important part of the allergic disease progression, may modify the PM-AR association in preschool children.

摘要：
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a third gas signaling molecule, is considered to play a vital role in the development and treatment of diseases. To elucidate the intricate role of H2S in the organism and its participation in disease processes, there is an urgent need to visualize the dynamics of H2S. However, most currently available molecular probes have limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and precision. In this study, the safe and biocompatible upconversion nanosensor NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@NaYF4 anchored with Ag2O was successfully fabricated for H2S detection with an ultralow detection limit at 0.93 ng/mL. NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@NaYF4@Ag2S is formed through in situ sulfuration reaction, and second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence can be recorded upon the presence of H2S under 808 nm excitation. The results demonstrate the exceptional detection linearity and high specificity for H2S quantification. Additionally, NaYF4:Yb3+, Tm3+@NaYF4@Ag2O possesses a safe nature in normal and cancer cells. This nanosensor presents a NIR fluorescence imaging strategy for highly sensitive and specific detection of H2S, which has promises to be a practical tool for biomedical applications.

摘要：
To thrive in nature, bacteria have to reproduce efficiently under favorable conditions and persist during stress. The global strategy that integrates the growth control and stress response remains to be explored. Here, we find that a moderate induction of (p)ppGpp reduces growth rate but significantly enhances the stress tolerance of E.coli, resulting from a global resource re-allocation from ribosome synthesis to the synthesis of stress-responsive proteins. Strikingly, the activation of stress response by (p)ppGpp is still largely retained in the absence of RpoS. In addition, (p)ppGpp induction could activate the catabolism of alanine and arginine, facilitating the adaption of bacteria to nutrient downshift. Our work demonstrates that the activation of stress response by (p)ppGpp could occur in an RpoS-independent manner and (p)ppGpp enables bacteria to integrate the control of growth and stress response in a seesaw fashion, thus acting as an important global regulator of the bacterial fitness landscape.
