Guided by argumentation schema theory, we conducted five psychological studies in the United States and China on arguments about vaccination. Study 1 replicated research about arguments on several topics, finding that agreement judgments are weighted toward claims, whereas quality judgments are weighted toward reasons. However, consistent with recent research, when this paradigm was extended to arguments about vaccination (Study 2), claims received more weight than reasons in judgments about agreement and quality. Studies 3 and 4 were conducted in the United States and China on how people process counterarguments against anti-vaccination assertions. Rebuttals did not influence agreement but played a role in argument quality judgments. Both political position (in the United States) and medical education (in China) predicted differences in argument evaluation. Bad reasons lowered agreement (Study 5), especially among participants studying health care. Political polarization apparently heightens the impact of claim side in the argumentation schema, likely to the detriment of public discourse.

We empirically derived subgroups from the SILCODE SCD cohort using cluster analysis based on eight neuropsychological measures and examined patterns of structural and functional indices of each cluster‐derived subgroup relative to NC. Four SCD subgroups emerged: dysexecutive/mixed, neuropsychiatric, amnestic, and a cluster‐derived normal group. Abstract Aims We evaluated whether Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) subtypes could be empirically derived within the Sino Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Decline (SILCODE) SCD cohort and examined associated neuroimaging markers, biomarkers, and clinical outcomes. Methods A cluster analysis was performed on eight neuropsychological test scores from 124 SCD SILCODE participants and 57 normal control (NC) subjects. Structural and functional neuroimaging indices were used to evaluate the SCD subgroups. Results Four subtypes emerged: (1) dysexecutive/mixed SCD (n = 23), (2) neuropsychiatric SCD (n = 24), (3) amnestic SCD (n = 22), and (4) cluster‐derived normal (n = 55) who exhibited normal performance in neuropsychological tests. Compared with the NC group, each subgroup showed distinct patterns in gray matter (GM) volume and the amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuations (ALFF). Lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values were only found in the neuropsychiatric SCD group relative to NC. Conclusion The identification of empirically derived SCD subtypes demonstrates the presence of heterogeneity in SCD neuropsychological profiles. The cluster‐derived normal group may represent the majority of SCD individuals who do not show progressive cognitive decline; the dysexecutive/mixed SCD and amnestic SCD might represent high‐risk groups with progressing cognitive decline; and finally, the neuropsychiatric SCD may represent a new topic in SCD research.

Interpretation bias (i.e. the selective negative interpretation of ambiguous stimuli) may contribute to the development and maintenance of health anxiety. However, the strength of the empirical evidence for this association remains a topic of debate. This study aimed to estimate the association between health anxiety and interpretation bias and to identify potential moderators of this association. Chinese-language databases (CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang), English-language databases (Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus), and German-language databases (Psyndex and PubPsych) were searched for relevant studies. There were 36 articles (39 studies) identified by this search (N = 8984), of which 32 articles (34 studies) were included in the meta-analysis (N = 8602). Results revealed a medium overall effect size (g = 0.67). Statistically equivalent effect sizes were observed for patients diagnosed with clinical health anxiety (g = 0.58) and subclinical health anxiety (g = 0.72). The effect sizes for threat stimuli that were health related (g = 0.68) and not health related (g = 0.63) did not differ significantly. The effect size for studies using an offline paradigm (g = 0.75) was significantly higher than that for studies using an online paradigm (g = 0.50). It is concluded that health anxiety is significantly and robustly associated with interpretation bias. These findings are of central importance for the advancement of models and treatment of health anxiety.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, depressive symptoms, a common emotional problem among adolescents, have become more prominent. Regarding the influencing factors of adolescent depressive symptoms, it is widely accepted that parents' problematic cellphone use around the family (specifically parental phubbing) is a strong predictive factor for the development of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp increase in the number of individuals with depressive symptoms, and the negative consequences of parental phubbing and depressive symptoms might have been exacerbated. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the association between parental phubbing and adolescent depressive symptoms as well as their underlying mechanism. Method: To test our hypotheses, we conducted an offline/online survey with 614 adolescents in Central China from May to June 2022, which corresponded to a period of strict lockdowns in some areas due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant. The participants completed a set of measures, including a technology interference questionnaire, a parent-child relationship scale, a self-concept clarity scale, and the depressive symptoms scale. Results: Parental phubbing was positively associated with adolescent depressive symptoms; the parent-child relationship and self-concept clarity could independently mediate this relationship; and the parent-child relationship and self-concept clarity were also serial mediators in this association. These findings extend previous research by highlighting the impact of parental technology use on their children and the underlying mechanism explaining adolescent depressive symptoms. They provide practical recommendations for parents to prioritize fostering a positive family environment and minimizing phubbing behaviors to enhance adolescent development, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Language and Speech, Ahead of Print. <br/>Daily conversation is usually face-to-face and characterized by rapid and fluent exchange of turns between interlocutors. With the need to communicate across long distances, advances in communication media, online audio communication, and online video communication have become convenient alternatives for an increasing number of people. However, the fluency of turn-taking may be influenced when people communicate using these different modes. In this study, we conducted a corpus analysis of face-to-face, online audio, and online video conversations collected from the internet. The fluency of turn-taking in face-to-face conversations differed from that of online audio and video conversations. Namely, the timing of turn-taking was shorter and with more overlaps in face-to-face conversations compared with online audio and video conversations. This can be explained by the limited ability of online communication modes to transmit non-verbal cues and network latency. In addition, our study could not completely exclude the effect of formality of conversation. The present findings have implications for the rules of turn-taking in human online conversations, in that the traditional rule of no-gap–no-overlap may not be fully applicable to online conversations.

In the recent years, the excessive use of internet has become frequent; it may lead to deficits in cognition and emotions. Commenting on online news is a popular way to express attitude and thoughts. It may have different impacts on the emotional state of healthy people and pathological internet users (PIUs). The impact is also related to the emotional valence of the commented text. This study aimed to explore the effect of making comments on online news and valenced text on the emotional state of PIUs. The sample included 32 undergraduate students (18 with PIU and 14 controls). The two groups commented on positive and negative online news in proper order, respectively. The emotion rating questionnaire was used to measure their emotion at different experimental stages in elicited positive and negative emotional states. The results displayed that when commenting on positive news, the emotional changes of PIU group were the same with the control group. In addition, the results indicated that when making comments on negative news, there was a difference between the PIU group and the control group for the extent of emotional changes. PIUs were rated higher than control group in "surprise" and "happiness" ways. The emotional state of PIU is easier to be affected by the act of commenting, revealing that PIUs may have poor ability of emotion management and emotional stability.

The current methods for measuring patient-reported outcomes for amphetamine (speed) craving have limitation ability to adapt to the needs of individual patients while maintaining consistency in their scores. This study aimed to investigate whether the 40-item Desires for Speed Questionnaire (DSQ) could be improved for assessing clinical subjects using computerized adaptive testing (CAT). A sample of 677 participants from four drug addiction treatment centers in China was utilized in the study. Two types of analysis were conducted using the response data. First, the psychometric properties of all items were evaluated to meet the requirements of CAT. Second, multiple CAT simulations were carried out using real response data. The results indicated that the CAT method, which only required a small number of items (50%-75%), produced results that were only slightly different from the full DSQ assessment in terms of measuring amphetamine craving and criterion validity. In conclusion, this study suggests that developing a DSQ CAT for clinical subjects is useful as it leads to more efficient measurement without compromising the reliability of the test outcomes. With the increasing development of science and technology, the Internet has become an essential part of people's daily lives providing great convenience. However, the Internet also leads to problematic Internet use (PIU) among adolescents, which has attracted increasing attention from the academic community. Peer victimization is a pervasive stressor among adolescents and has been proven to lead to a series of mental health challenges. Although the association between peer victimization and PIU has been well documented, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to understand how and when peer victimization increases the risk of PIU among adolescents. Building on Agnew's general strain theory, this study hypothesized that depression mediates the relationship between peer victimization and PIU and humor moderates the mediating model. To examine these hypotheses, 469 middle school students were recruited to complete a series of questionnaires on peer victimization, depression, humor, and PIU. The results showed that depression partially mediated the relationship between peer victimization and PIU. A moderated mediation analysis indicated that humor moderated the indirect pathway, consistent with the reverse stress-buffering model, the relationship between peer victimization and depression was stronger for adolescents with high humor. However, the relationship between depression and PIU was weaker in adolescents with high humor, which is in line with the stress-buffering model. These findings could be of significance in understanding the underlying mechanism of PIU associated with peer victimization and provide a new perspective for preventing PIU among adolescents, especially those experiencing peer victimization. The limitations and considerations for future research are discussed.

Biological processes such as transcription, repair, and regulation require interactions between DNA and proteins. To unravel their functions, it is imperative to determine the high-resolution structures of DNA-protein complexes. However, experimental methods for this purpose are costly and technically demanding. Consequently, there is an urgent need for computational techniques to identify the structures of DNA-protein complexes. Despite technological advancements, accurately identifying DNA-protein complexes through computational methods still poses a challenge. Our team has developed a cutting-edge deep-learning approach called DDPScore that assesses DNA-protein complex structures. DDPScore utilizes a 4D convolutional neural network to overcome limited training data. This approach effectively captures local and global features while comprehensively considering the conformational changes arising from the flexibility during the DNA-protein docking process. DDPScore consistently outperformed the available methods in comprehensive DNA-protein complex docking evaluations, even for the flexible docking challenges. DDPScore has a wide range of applications in predicting and designing structures of DNA-protein complexes. Biological processes such as transcription, repair, and regulation require interactions between DNA and proteins.
