Effects of the instructor's pointing gestures on learning performance in video lectures

Recent research on video lectures has indicated that the instructor's pointing gestures facilitate learning performance. This study examined whether the instructor's pointing gestures were superior to nonhuman cues in enhancing video lectures learning, and second, if there was a positive effect, what the underlying mechanisms of the effect might be. There were three kinds of video lectures in the study: one with the instructor's pointing gestures, one with nonhuman cues, and one without any cues. Eighty-four Chinese undergraduates were randomly assigned to view one of the three video lectures in a laboratory. As hypothesized, the results of analyses of variance showed that the instructor's pointing gestures improved learning performance more than the nonhuman cues and no-cues conditions. The pointing gestures directed the learners’ visual attention to the relevant learning content of PowerPoint (PPT) slides in the video lecture. This suggests that the instructor's pointing gestures can be a valuable means to improve learning performance in video lectures, in particular PPT slides with much learning information. © 2016 British Educational Research Association

摘要:
In this paper we propose a mathematical model of bone remodeling with time delays of both osteoclast-derived paracrine signaling of tumor and tumor-derived paracrine signaling of osteoclast. The effects of time delays on the growth of tumor cells and bone system are studied in multiple myeloma-induced bone disease. In the case of small osteoclast-derived paracrine signaling, it is found that the growth of tumor cells slows down, the oscillation period of the ratio of osteoclasts to osteoblasts is extended with increasing time delay, and there is a competition between the delay and osteoclast-derived paracrine signaling. In the case of large tumor-derived paracrine signaling, the tumor-derived paracrine signaling can induce a more significant decline in tumor growth for long time delay, and thus slowing down the progression of bone disease. There is an optimal coupling between the tumor-derived paracrine signaling of osteoclasts and time delay during the progressions of bone diseases, which suppresses the tumor growth and the regression of bone disease.

摘要:
This paper explores the effect of video game content, context and experience on cooperative behavior over three research studies. Study 1 is a cross-sectional correlation study exploring the relationship between the video game team-play frequency and pro-social behavior, Study 2 is a 2 (game content: violent video game and neutral video game) × 2 (game context: single-play and team-play) design with the dependent variable being cooperative behavior and Study 3 is a single factor design experiment which examines the effect of the gaming experience on cooperative behavior under a collaborative context. The main findings were that the team-play frequency had a positive correlation with pro-social behavior, and pro-social video game exposure significantly predicted pro-social behavior. Collaborative play was found to significantly increase cooperation in both violent and neutral video games. However, the level of gaming experience tended to moderate the relationship between collaborative play and the level of cooperation. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) is a novel β-lactamase enzyme that confers enteric bacteria with nearly complete resistance to all β-lactam antibiotics, so it raises a formidable and global threat to human health. However, the binding mechanism between apo-NDM-1 and antibiotics as well as related conformational changes remains poorly understood, which largely hinders the overcoming of its antibiotic resistance. In our study, long-time conventional molecular dynamics simulation and Markov state models were applied to reveal both the dynamical and conformational landscape of apo-NDM-1: the MD simulation demonstrates that loop L3, which is responsible for antibiotic binding, is the most flexible and undergoes dramatic conformational changes;moreover, the Markov state model built from the simulation maps four metastable states including open, semiopen, and closed conformations of loop L3 as well as frequent transitions between the states. Our findings propose a possible conformational selection model for the binding mechanism between apo-NDM-1 and antibiotics, which facilitates the design of novel inhibitors and antibiotics. ©2017 American Chemical Society.

A search for the rare decays Bs0→μ+μ- and B0→μ+μ- is performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in pp collisions corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb-1. An excess of Bs0→μ+μ- decays is observed with a significance of 7.8 standard deviations, representing the first observation of this decay in a single experiment. The branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs0→μ+μ-)=(3.0±0.6-0.2+0.3)×10-9, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The first measurement of the Bs0→μ+μ- effective lifetime, τ(Bs0→μ+μ-)=2.04±0.44±0.05 ps, is reported. No significant excess of B0→μ+μ- decays is found, and a 95% confidence level upper limit, B(B0→μ+μ-)<3.4×10-10, is determined. The polarization of photons produced in radiative Bs0 decays is studied for the first time. The data are recorded by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb-1 at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. A time-dependent analysis of the Bs0→φγ decay rate is conducted to determine the parameter AΔ, which is related to the ratio of right- over left-handed photon polarization amplitudes in b→sγ transitions. A value of AΔ=-0.98-0.52+0.46-0.20+0.23 is measured. This result is consistent with the standard model prediction within 2 standard deviations. © 2017 CERN. © 2017 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration. In order to explore the relationships among learning achievement, personality characteristics and learning context, and to test what kind of personality characteristics are suitable for what kind of learning situation, an experimental study was conducted on 45 college students (24 women, 21 men) in China. Participants were randomly assigned to 6 days of instruction in one of three learning situations: traditional classroom, online learning, and flipped classroom (blended learning). Personality was assessed in terms of the Big Five traits, and achievement scores reflected learning of the course material. Results showed that (1) There were no significant differences in the influence of the three learning situations on learning achievement;(2) Among the Big Five personality traits, Conscientiousness had a significant impact on learners’academic performance, and positively predicted learning achievement;(3) There was a significant interaction between Openness and learning situation: students with high Openness showed the best performance in the online learning situation, and did worst in the traditional classroom;students with moderate Openness did best in the flipped classroom. The results of this study suggest that in the process of personalized education, we should attach importance to the matching of learning situation and individual differences. This may be especially true in online learning and flipped classroom environments, in order to optimize the learning effect in learners with different personality characteristics. ©Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

The first observation of the decays Λb0→χc1pK- and Λb0→χc2pK- is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: B(Λb0→χc1pK-)B(Λb0→J/ψpK-)=0.242±0.014±0.013±0.009,B(Λb0→χc2pK-)B(Λb0→J/ψpK-)=0.248±0.020±0.014±0.009,B(Λb0→χc2pK-)B(Λb0→χc1pK-)=1.02±0.10±0.02±0.05,where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the branching fractions of the χc1→J/ψγ and χc2→J/ψγ decays. Using both decay modes, the mass of the Λb0 baryon is also measured to be mΛb0=5619.44±0.28±0.26 MeV/c2, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. © 2017 CERN.

Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) is a hot research topic in natural language processing (NLP). The most challenging problem in KBQA is how to understand the semantic information of natural language questions and how to bridge the semantic gap between the natural language questions and the structured fact triples in knowledge base. This paper focuses on simple questions which can be answered by a single fact triple in knowledge base. We propose a topic enhanced deep structured semantic model for KBQA. The proposed method considers the task of KBQA as a matching problem between questions and the subjects and predicates in knowledge base. And the proposed model consists of two stages to match the subjects and predicates, respectively. In the first stage, we propose a Convolutional based Topic Entity Extraction Model (CTEEM) to extract topic entities mentioned in questions. With the extracted entities, we can retrieve the relevant candidate fact triples from knowledge base and obviously decrease the amount of noising candidates. In the second stage, we employ Deep Structured Semantic Models (DSSMs) to compute the semantic relevant score between questions and predicates in the candidates. And we combine the semantic level and the lexical level scores to rank the candidates. We evaluate the proposed method on KBQA dataset released by NLPCC-ICCPOL 2016. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieves the third place among the 21 submitted systems. Furthermore, we also extend the DSSM by using BiLSTM and integrate a convolutional structure on the top of BiLSTM layers. Our experimental results show that the extension models can further improve the performance.

A growing body of research has documented that interparental conflict is associated with adolescent Internet addiction. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relation. Based on emotional security theory and diathesis-stress model, the present study examined whether emotional insecurity mediated the relationship between interparental conflict and adolescent Internet addiction, and whether this mediating process was moderated by big five personality traits. Our theoretical model was tested using data collected from 1189 Chinese adolescents (Mage=14.43 years, SD=1.41). Participants completed anonymous questionnaires assessing their perceptions of interparental conflict, emotional insecurity, big five personality traits, and Internet addiction. After controlling for demographic variables, interparental conflict was positively associated with adolescent Internet addiction. Mediation analysis indicated that emotional insecurity partially mediated the association between interparental conflict and adolescent Internet addiction. Tests of moderated mediation further revealed that the mediated path was stronger for adolescents with higher neuroticism or extraversion. Results highlight the significance of identifying the mechanisms that moderate the mediated paths between interparental conflict and adolescent Internet addiction. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

We report on a measurement of the flavor-specific Bs0 lifetime and of the Ds- lifetime using proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Approximately 407 000 Bs0→Ds(∗)-μ+νμ decays are partially reconstructed in the K+K-π-μ+ final state. The Bs0 and Ds- natural widths are determined using, as a reference, kinematically similar B0→D(∗)-μ+νμ decays reconstructed in the same final state. The resulting differences between widths of Bs0 and B0 mesons and of Ds- and D- mesons are ΔΓ(B)=-0.0115±0.0053(stat)±0.0041(syst) ps-1 and ΔΓ(D)=1.0131±0.0117(stat)±0.0065(syst) ps-1, respectively. Combined with the known B0 and D- lifetimes, these yield the flavor-specific Bs0 lifetime, τBs0fs=1.547±0.013(stat)±0.010(syst)±0.004(τB) ps and the Ds- lifetime, τDs-=0.5064±0.0030(stat)±0.0017(syst)±0.0017(τD) ps. The last uncertainties originate from the limited knowledge of the B0 and D- lifetimes. The results improve upon current determinations. © 2017 CERN. for the LHCb Collaboration. We report the first observation of a baryonic Bs0 decay, Bs0→pΛK-, using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1. The branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs0→pΛK-)+B(Bs0→pΛK+)=[5.46±0.61±0.57±0.50(B)±0.32(fs/fd)]×10-6, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, the third uncertainty accounts for the experimental uncertainty on the branching fraction of the B0→pΛπ- decay used for normalization, and the fourth uncertainty relates to the knowledge of the ratio of b-quark hadronization probabilities fs/fd. © 2017 CERN.

A search for the B0→K+K- decay is performed using pp-collision data collected by LHCb. The data set corresponds to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0 fb-1 at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. This decay is observed for the first time, with a significance of more than 5 standard deviations. The analysis also results in an improved measurement of the branching fraction for the Bs0→π+π- decay. The measured branching fractions are B(B0→K+K-)=(7.80±1.27±0.81±0.21)×10-8 and B(Bs0→π+π-)=(6.91±0.54±0.63±0.19±0.40)×10-7. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the B0→K+π- branching fraction used as a normalization. For the Bs0 mode, the fourth accounts for the uncertainty on the ratio of the probabilities for b quarks to hadronize into Bs0 and B0 mesons. © 2017 CERN.

The first observation of the decay of a B0 meson to a purely baryonic final state, B0→pp, is reported. The proton-proton collision data sample used was collected with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1. The branching fraction is determined to be B(B0→pp)=(1.25±0.27±0.18)×10-8, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The decay mode B0→pp is the rarest decay of the B0 meson observed to date. The decay Bs0→pp is also investigated. No signal is seen and the upper limit B(Bs0→pp)<1.5×10-8 at 90% confidence level is set on the branching fraction. © 2017 CERN

摘要:
Accumulating evidence suggests that multiple environmental and individual risk factors are involved in the development of adolescent Internet addiction. However, previous research has primarily relied on variable-centered approaches to examine how each risk factor functions to predict Internet addiction in isolation, ignoring the possibility that there are subgroups of adolescents who may differ in their combined exposure to multiple risk factors. Using a cross-sectional design, we sampled 14 risk factors across multiple socio-ecological levels and used a person-centered approach to identify subgroups of multiple risk exposure and to relate these subgroups to adolescent Internet addiction. A total of 998 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 15.15 years, SD = 1.57) participated in this study by filling out questionnaires regarding 14 family, school, peer, and individual risk factors and Internet addiction. Latent profile analysis identified 4 profiles that evidenced distinct patterns of risk factors: low risk (37%), moderate risk (44%), high risk (15%) and peer risk (4%). The high risk and moderate risk profiles showed higher risk for Internet addiction than the low risk profile. The peer risk profile had higher risk for Internet addiction than the high risk, moderate risk, and low risk profiles. These findings suggest that considerable heterogeneity exists in multiple risk exposure and the multiple risk exposure profiles are differentially associated with adolescent Internet addiction. Results from this study can inform the development of tailored intervention and prevention strategies to reduce adolescent Internet addiction. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Sensitivity analysis is concerned with understanding how the model output depends on uncertainties (variances) in inputs and identifying which inputs are important in contributing to the prediction imprecision. Uncertainty determination in output is the most crucial step in sensitivity analysis. In the present paper, an analytic expression, which can exactly evaluate the uncertainty in output as a function of the output's derivatives and inputs’central moments, is firstly deduced for general multivariate models with given relationship between output and inputs in terms of Taylor series expansion. A γ-order relative uncertainty for output, denoted by R<inf>v</inf><sup>γ</sup>, is introduced to quantify the contributions of input uncertainty of different orders. On this basis, it is shown that the widely used approximation considering the first order contribution from the variance of input variable can satisfactorily express the output uncertainty only when the input variance is very small or the input–output function is almost linear. Two applications of the analytic formula are performed to the power grid and economic systems where the sensitivities of both actual power output and Economic Order Quantity models are analyzed. The importance of each input variable in response to the model output is quantified by the analytic formula. ©2016 Elsevier B.V.

Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) are critical to the cell cycle and many other biological processes, and as such, are considered as one of the promising targets for therapy against cancer and other diseases. Most pan-CDK inhibitors bind to the highly conserved catalytic ATP-binding pocket and therefore lack the specificity to prevent side effects. It is desirable to develop drugs targeting non-catalytic pockets for specificity towards individual CDKs. Here we performed a systematic analysis of non-catalytic pockets on CDKs and identified a region underneath the T-loop, which we term TL pocket, for potential inhibitor development. Specifically, we compared the TL pockets of human CDK2 and CDK7-homolog Pfmrk of Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria-causing parasite. Molecular dynamics simulations of several short peptides revealed that this less conserved TL pocket could be used to design potentially specific inhibitors against malaria disease. © 2017 Chinese Physical Society and IOP Publishing Ltd.

A growing body of research has documented that teacher-student relationship is negatively associated with adolescent Internet addiction. However, little is known about the mediating mechanisms underlying this relation. The present study investigated whether psychological security and deviant peer affiliation mediate the link between teacher-student relationship and adolescent Internet addiction. A sample of 747 middle school students (51% male; Mage=13.73 years, SD=1.00) completed questionnaires regarding demographics, teacher-student relationship, psychological security, deviant peer affiliation, and Internet addiction. After controlling for demographic covariates, the results revealed that: (a) teacher-student relationship was negatively associated with Internet addiction; (b) both psychological security and deviant peer affiliation partially mediated the link between teacher-student relationship and Internet addition in a parallel fashion; and (c) psychological security and deviant peer affiliation also sequentially mediated the link between teacher-student relationship and Internet addition. These findings have important implications for the prevention and intervention of adolescent Internet addiction. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

The decays χc1→J/ψμ+μ- and χc2→J/ψμ+μ- are observed and used to study the resonance parameters of the χc1 and χc2 mesons. The masses of these states are measured to be m(χc1)=3510.71±0.04(stat)±0.09(syst) MeV and m(χc2)=3556.10±0.06(stat)±0.11(syst) MeV, where the knowledge of the momentum scale for charged particles dominates the systematic uncertainty. The momentum-scale uncertainties largely cancel in the mass difference m(χc2)-m(χc1)=45.39±0.07(stat)±0.03(syst) MeV. The natural width of the χc2 meson is measured to be Γ(χc2)=2.10±0.20(stat)±0.02(syst) MeV. These results are in good agreement with and have comparable precision to the current world averages. © 2017 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration.

摘要:
Mo-based binary oxides (MBOs) and Mo-based ternary oxides (MTOs) are a research focus because of their widespread applications. The traditional synthesis routes for MBOs and MTOs require high temperature and are time intense. Here, a rapid, facile, and scalable strategy to efficiently fabricate MBOs and MTOs with various morphologies and crystal structures is reported. Only 1 min is required for the whole process and the yield is above 90%. This strategy is the simplest and the fastest method reported and exhibits large potential for application. Furthermore, the as-synthesized HxMoO3 nanobelts and NiMoO4·xH2O nanowires display a specific capacitance of 660.3 F g−1 at 2 mV s−1 and a specific capacity of 549 C g−1 at 1 A g−1. In addition, to assemble the HxMoO3 and NiMoO4·xH2O electrodes together, the solid state hybrid electrolyte is employed to take advantage of MBOs and MTOs. The obtained NiMoO4·xH2O//HxMoO3 device delivers a specific capacitance of 156 F g−1 at 0.8 A g−1 and an energy density of 55.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 640 W kg−1, making it attractive for application as an energy storage material. © 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
