<jats:p>In the context of global fighting against the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, how to promote the public implementation of preventive behavior is the top priority of pandemic prevention and control. This study aimed at probing how the media would affect the public’s preventive behavior and excessive preventive intention accordingly. Data were collected from 653 respondents in the Chinese mainland through online questionnaires and further analyzed by using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Taking risk perception, negative emotions, and subjective norms as mediators, this study explored the impact of mass media exposure and social networking services involvement on preventive behavior and excessive preventive intention. Based on differences in the severity of the pandemic, the samples were divided into the Wuhan group and other regions group for multi-group comparison. The results showed that mass media exposure had a significant positive impact on subjective norms; moreover, mass media exposure could significantly enhance preventive behavior through subjective norms, and social networking services involvement had a significant positive impact on negative emotions; meanwhile, social networking services involvement promoted excessive preventive intention through negative emotions.</jats:p>

Abstract abstract: As a writer rooted in China's historical, social, and cultural transformation, Jia Pingwa has expressed in his works his anxieties over environmental deterioration and the effects of that deterioration on people. With the thriving of ecocriticism in China, his Remembering Wolves has received a new wave of significant attention due to its ecological concerns. In tracing Gao Ziming's journey to photograph the fifteen remaining wolves in Shangzhou, Jia weaves different strands of ecological thoughts into the story. Through a close reading of this novel, this essay first attempts to reveal the way Jia expresses his anxieties over the current racial degeneration, it then proceeds to analyze his mobilization of traditional Chinese ecological thoughts in his representation of nature. It ends by highlighting the intrinsic connection between the environmental crisis and the current social problems in China.

Identity is a concept that has been defined in many ways and scholars have built theories of identity to explain persons’ and people's sense of the term. In this article, I compare and contrast theories developed in applied linguistics, social psychology, anthropology and communication sciences and conclude that each is grounded on the particularity of a social context. To expand the particular contexts studied by identity theorists, I consider the varied responses of individuals and groups to the influence of a hegemonic language. Although contact by speakers of a local language with a hegemonic language is sometimes seen as endangering the local language and threatening speakers’ identities, I reject that as a pessimistic oversimplification. The studies I review of persons in contact with hegemonic languages provide new insights into how personal identities are contested and creatively constructed.

This study explores co-occurrence patterns and register variation of metadiscourse markers in spoken language. The few metadiscourse studies in spoken language have concentrated on specific metadiscourse markers or registers. This article conducts a more comprehensive analysis of metadiscourse in spoken discourse. Drawing on a modified reflexive model of metadiscourse, the study uses multidimensional analysis and a corpus of 126 spoken texts to extract spoken metadiscourse dimensions and investigate metadiscourse variation across nondiscussion broadcasts, discussion broadcasts, scripted speeches, unscripted speeches, public conversations and casual conversations. Three spoken metadiscourse dimensions emerged from a factor analysis and were labelled “two-way communication”, “united organization” and “discourse presentation”. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of these dimensions revealed clear register variation of metadiscourse across spoken registers. Dialogues more frequently than monologues and institutional discourse more frequently than mundane discourse adopt metadiscourse markers to emphasize interaction, seek cooperation and present discourse. The study contributes not only to a fuller understanding of metadiscourse in spoken language but also to computer-assisted research on metadiscourse.
