Student-to-student connectedness is promoted by active, student-centered learning processes. It is a socio-psychological result of interpersonal communication and behavior in the classroom, which emulates belonging, cohesiveness, and supportiveness among peers. ) amendment thereof, which have been used for nearly two decades to gain insight into instructional processes in face-to-face environments. However, research on student-to-student connectedness is relatively limited in the context of modern, technology-mediated learning environments. Arguably, where student-to-student connectedness is most urgently needed because of the decrease in face-to-face contact time between students and their instructors within online and hybrid learning environments. This study is a systematic literature review that presents a synthesis of twenty-four peer-reviewed journal articles, which empirically investigate student-to-student connectedness within face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments. The documentation of data is organized in accordance to the six aspects of activity theory (subjects, objects, mediating artifacts, rules, community, division of labor) to provide a basis for understanding the dynamics of each research report, as well as to assist identifying the trends and gaps in the literature, thereby expediting future research on this topic.

摘要:
Educational inequality is an important factor in the development of human capital, and limits the output of regional economic activities. The unequal distribution of educational resources has become a hot topic noticed by the public, and has restricted sustainable economic growth. This paper provides a better understanding of educational inequality, and explores the impacts of information and communication technology (ICT) and transportation infrastructure on the distribution of educational resources. The panel data models are constructed to discuss the relationship among ICT, transportation infrastructure, and educational inequality, using the data of 31 provinces in China from 2006 to 2016. The empirical results show that there is a positive relationship between ICT and educational inequality, while transportation infrastructure can restrain the unequal distribution of educational resources. Moreover, there is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between transportation infrastructure and educational inequality. Since China's education reform in 2010, the relationship among ICT, transportation infrastructure, and educational inequality has been significantly changed, as well as the influence mechanism of ICT. In addition, transportation infrastructure in China western regions can effectively alleviate the problem of educational inequality, and its impact will increase with the growth of transportation investments. It is necessary to consider the rational allocation of educational resources, and this is essential to relieve the problem of educational inequality. Therefore, our results demonstrate the key roles of information technology and transportation network in the field of education, and provide some new ideas for the solution of educational inequality.

Online learning engagement detection is a fundamental problem in educational information technology. Efficient detection of students’ learning situations can provide information to teachers to help them identify students having trouble in real time. To improve the accuracy of learning engagement detection, we have collected two aspects of students’ behavior data: face data (using adaptive weighted Local Gray Code Patterns for facial expression recognition) and mouse interaction. In this article, we propose a novel learning engagement detection algorithm based on the collected data (students’ behavior), which come from the cameras and the mouse in the online learning environment. The cameras were utilized to capture students’ face images, while the mouse movement data were captured simultaneously. In the process of image data labeling, we built two datasets for classifier training and testing. One took the mouse movement data as a reference, while the other did not. We performed experiments on two datasets using several methods and found that the classifier trained by the former dataset had a better performance, and its recognition rate is higher than that of the latter one (94.60% vs. 91.51%).

Course reviews, which is designed as an interactive feedback channel in Massive Open Online Courses, has promoted the generation of large-scale text comments. These data, which contain not only learners' concerns, opinions and feelings toward courses, instructors, and platforms but also learners' interactions (e.g., post, reply), are generally subjective and extremely valuable for online instruction. The purpose of this study is to automatically reveal these potential information from 50 online courses by an improved unified topic model Behavior-Sentiment Topic Mixture, which is validated and effective for detecting frequent topics learners discuss most, topics-oriented sentimental tendency as well as how learners interact with these topics. The results show that learners focus more on the topics about course-related content with positive sentiment, as well as the topics about course logistics and video production with negative sentiment. Moreover, the distributions of behaviors associated with these topics have some differences.

Automatic multimedia learning resources recommendation has become an increasingly relevant problem: it allows students to discover new learning resources that match their tastes, and enables the e-learning system to target the learning resources to the right students. In this paper, we propose a content-based recommendation algorithm based on convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN can be used to predict the latent factors from the text information of the multimedia resources. To train the CNN, its input and output should first be solved. For its input, the language model is used. For its output, we propose the latent factor model, which is regularized by L (1)-norm. Furthermore, the split Bregman iteration method is introduced to solve the model. The major novelty of the proposed recommendation algorithm is that the text information is used directly to make the content-based recommendation without tagging. Experimental results on public databases in terms of quantitative assessment show significant improvements over conventional methods. In addition, the split Bregman iteration method which is introduced to solve the model can greatly improve the training efficiency.

We have observed that many computer-supported writing environments based on pedagogical strategies have only been designed to incorporate the cognitive aspects, but motivational aspects should also be included. Hence, we theorize that integrating game-based learning into the writing environment may be a practical approach that can facilitate student participation, not only helping students learn how to write, but also sustaining their willingness to write. In this study, we investigate the effects of the game-based writing environment on improving students' participation, performance, and interest in writing. An experiment was conducted to compare the effectiveness of 2 approaches to writing in language arts at an elementary school. Two hundred forty-five third grade students participated in the experiment over a period of 1 year. One hundred thirty-nine students were assigned to an experimental group and learned with a game-based writing environment, and 106 students were in the contrast group and learned with an online writing environment. The empirical results show that the game-based writing environment can effectively promote students' writing participation, writing performance, interest in writing, as well as their perceptions of the use of educational self-management games. Some implications of the experimental results are also discussed.

With the wide deployment of the video sensor network and the rapid development of video spatialization technology, the large volume of complex GeoVideo data necessitates improvements in the application efficiency of the GeoVideo database and GeoVideo surveillance system. Traditional storage management approaches focus on the optimization of access to the GeoVideo stream. However, they suffer from poor management of the diverse movement processes contained within it; for example, they cannot support associative queries or comprehensive analysis of multi-type GeoVideo data in complex geographic environments. This paper takes physical movement process in GeoVideo as a new type of object and carries out an objectified organization of the heterogeneous GeoVideo data around it (including the video stream, spatial references, interpretations of the video data, and the overall scene) in a Not only SQL-Structured Query Language (NoSQL-SQL) hybrid GeoVideo database. This paper systematically explores the hybrid spatiotemporal indexes and multi-modal retrieval methods around movement processes, which enrich the query modes of the GeoVideo data. A prototype implementation and experimental analysis are presented to prove the feasibility and effectiveness of this organization and retrieval approach.
